Obituary

Harvey Wichman 1931-2018

Born on November 10, 1931 in Milwaukee, WI, Harvey was the first of five children born to Helen (Bagley) Wichman and Ray Wichman. At age 5 his family moved to Greendale, WI, where he lived until he graduated high school. At age 16 he and his friends formed an Explorer Air Scout troop. They bought a J3 Piper cub in which he learned to fly.

Harvey obtained his BA and MA degrees from California State University, Long Beach and his PhD from Claremont Graduate University. He taught Psychology for almost 40 years at Claremont McKenna College and Claremont Graduate University. For many years, he also taught flying at both Harvey Mudd College and Cable Airport. Harvey’s research was primarily in the area of Aviation Psychology in which he worked with McDonnell Douglas, NASA, and JPL. He was known as a superlative teacher, winning many awards and the lifelong friendship of numerous students.

He was a beloved brother, husband, father and grandfather who is survived by his sister Rosemary Derouin, his wife Ann, his two sons Russell (Sue-Ann) and Glenn, and his four grandchildren, Caleb, Jake (and their mother Nina), Heather (Jake) , and Sara-Beth. He was also the patriarch of a large and loving family of relatives too numerous to mention. There will be a private service for the immediate family. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Braille Institute (www.brailleinstitute.org/ways-to-give.html) which helped him greatly after he lost his vision in 2013.

  1. I was fortunate to work with Harv and many other faculty members at Claremont McKenna College during my almost 39 years there and loved every minute of it. Harv was such a gentleman and yet also had a great sense of humor and joy for life. He was always an inspiration to me. He will be missed!

I was fortunate to know Harv the 30 years I worked at CMC. A brilliant mind, great sense of humor and always a gentleman. We have lost a man who was loved and respected by all who knew him. My deepest sympathies to Ann and family.

  3. Such a dear man. I worked with Harv over my 30 years at CMC. Always a pleasure and laughter to boot! He used to run into P-6 yelling “Emergency, Emergency Stop the presses!” When he’d need something for his next class. Fondly remembered, never forgotten. My prayers are with all his family and friends who will certainly miss him.

I was introduced to Harvey as a young teenager in 1984. Harv had taught my Dad how to fly at Cable Airport beginning in 1966 and they remained friends and flying companions for 40 years. When at a young age, I expressed a desire to become an Airline Pilot my Dad knew just the person up for the challenge of teaching a 16 year old how to fly an airplane. With Harvey’s calm demeanor, unparalleled skill as an educator and mentor, we set off into the skies together out of Cable Airport in what would lay the foundation for which all of my flying skills would be based. Some 8 months later, I earned my Private Pilots license. After graduating High School I went on to College and continued taking flying lessons out of Cable. Our busy schedules created conflicts for flying lessons, however Harv was always someone I could call upon for Information and advice. My Dad and I remained friends and flying enthusiast with Harv, attending the Reno Air Races together and receiving recurrent flight training with him. 34 years later and an Airline Captain on a Boeing 737 for a major airline, I look back fondly at those young years together and remember the values and skill Harvey so patiently instilled in me which became the basis for where I am today..Thank you Harvey.
