Harry Wilson Lawton, 77 was born December 3, 1927 in California and passed away November 20, 2005 in the loving presence of family and friends in San Juan Capistrano, California. Harry, who taught creative writing for twenty yers at the University of California, Riverside, is the author of the non-fiction novel Willie Boy, which received the James D. Phelan Award in Literature and the Southwest Literature Award. The book was filmed by Universal Studios in 1969 as 'Tell Them Willie Boy is Here,' starring Robert Redford and Robert Blake. Born in Southern California and educated at the University of California, Berkeley, Harry was a newspaperman for ten years, serving on the Oakland Tribune, the San Clemente Sun, and the Riverside Press-Enterprise, where he won many awards for investigating reporting, including the California State Fair Gold Medal in Journalism. His fiction and more recently, poetry, have appeared in many literary magazines; and, in the field of anthropology, he is the author of a number of monographs and papers on Southern California ethnohistory. He has served as editor of the Journal of California Anthropology and managing editor of the Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology. He is Co-founder and Director of Malki Museum Press, which specializes in books on California indians.
