Obituary

Gwen Canfield
April 29, 1914 – September 14, 2011

Gwen Canfield, 97, longtime resident of Laguna Beach, California, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.

She was born on April 29, 1914, in Storm Lake, Iowa to John and Anna (Coyle) Toohey.

Gwen wed Dell A. Canfield on October 29, 1934, and they were happily married for 66 years before he died in February of 2001.

She is the beloved mother of four children: Barbara Hillman, Don Canfield, Margie Canfield Willis, and Sue Cable (Wade). She has 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Gwen was famous for her generosity, hospitality, fun loving spirit, and apple pies! She was a true ‘party girl’ never wanting to miss out on any fun, and her mind was razor sharp to the end.

She will be sorely missed, but leaves an incredible legacy that will live on in all of us.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Newport Beach.

  1. We only met Gwen once, but our impression is lasting. She was vibrant, witty and loving and we felt al of that in just five minutes. As they say, “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree” and in Sue and Stacy we see the same wonderful traits. Our prayers are with you all. Love, Barb and Dan Heneghan

  2. Gwen was full of fun and had a zest for life. She was my best friend Margie’s mom and I will always cherish the memories I have of her when I was growing up. She also helped Weldon and I with the purchase of our first home. May God give you strength during this difficult time.

    With Deepest Sympathy,

    Weldon and Carleen Smith

  5. Gwen was a presence. I feel lucky to be among one of many to know her and have shared a laugh and glass of wine. Even a waffle.

Love and condolences to her wonderful family.
