Obituary

Gusta Cornelia Frieser-Welcker, better known as ‘Tante Corrie’ or ‘Oma,’ passed away peacefully on April 12, 2009, with her family by her side.

She was born in Kudus, Indonesia on June 3, 1921.  On March 21, 1947 she married Edward Gilles Welcker.  After living in Indonesia, Holland and San Francisco, the family settled in Covina, California in 1962.  In 2007 Mom and Dad moved to a retirement community in Laguna Hills, California. They recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in March, 2009.

Mom’s hobbies included gardening, sewing, cooking and spending time with friends and family. She loved flowers.  Mom loved to laugh and make people laugh.  Even during her most difficult last days she never lost her sense of humor.  There was always time for conversation, laughter and good food.

She is survived by her devoted husband; 5 children, Yvonne Bell, Sonja Turner, Erneman Welcker, Lia Taubert and Jan Willem Welcker; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.  Her love for all of us was unconditional.  Her wish is for our family to always be together, for her friends to remember her, and for everyone to always laugh.

Her presence may be gone but her spirit will always live in our hearts.

Please join us in the celebration of her life on April 25, 2009 at 9 AM at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 24252 El Toro Rd., Laguna Woods followed by burial at Ascension Cemetery, 24754 Trabuco Rd., Lake Forest.  There will be a reception immediately after the services at the home of Jim & Yvonne Bell.

The family requests that flowers for Gusta’s services be sent to O’Connor Mortuary, Laguna Hills, no later than 5 PM on Friday, April 24.

    Dear Yvonne and Jim —
You were so gracious to let us stay at your home during the fires back in 2007. Because of that, we had the chance to meet your wonderful mom and dad. Please accept our sympathy at this time for the loss of your mother. Our thoughts are with you. And, please take comfort in knowing that she will always be with you and your family in spirit.
    With love,
    Laura, Dick, and Sara Ridley

Growing up on Kingside Drive in Covina has a lot of fond memories for me. I remember kids I used to go to school with and play with would come over and talk to mom. She would always have a treat for them. Our home was filled with lots of people, lots of laughter, lots of food and lots of love. I will never forget growing up on Kingside Drive. Thank you mom for everything you’ve done for me, Jeff, Shawn and Jamie. We love and miss you so much.
