Obituary

Gretchen Ursula Schulz

Gretchen was born on August 26, 1939 in Torrance CA. She was the middle child of 3 girls, including Irmgard and Erika, born to August and Erna Mueller, who soon after her birth, moved to Sunland, CA. Gretchen picked up the violin as a young girl and became an accomplished violinist. She sang in the Faith Lutheran Church Choir, where she was a long standing member. She was part of Glendale College Homecoming Court and was crowned “The 1st” Miss Sunland Tujunga in 1957. Gretchen married Lawrence Schulz in 1958 and had 3 children Cynthia, Stephanie and Karl. They divorced in the late 80’s. She enjoyed playing volleyball, singing with the Sweet Adelines, and ballroom dancing. She sold Jafra Cosmetics for over 30 years. She also enjoyed working in her garden tending to her Meyer lemon and green apple tree in Sunland, and her fig trees at her Oak Hills home. She also kept herself busy with many friends. She had a generous heart for all animals, especially dogs; where she rescued, raised and loved many.

Later in her life, Gretchen reconnected with a high school friend, Lanny Hyde and were sweethearts for the remainder of her life. She and Lanny went on great adventures together. They went off-roading, boating, attended and participated in car shows where Lanny showed some of his show stopping classic cars. They also traveled across the country on Lanny’s Harley, to Milwaukee Wisconsin, for the Centennial Harley Davidson celebration.

In her 83 years of accomplishments and adventures, perhaps her proudest moment was becoming “Omie”. She was granted this title 3 times over with her grandchildren Kevin, Kirra and Gabriel. She loved her grandkids and shared the best part of herself with them.

Gretchen leaves behind many friends and extended family, her 3 children Cynthia, Stephanie and Karl, daughter-in-law Sandra, 3 grandchildren, Kevin (his wife Regan), Kirra and Gabriel and her beloved high school sweetheart Lanny.

Dear Cynthia, Stephanie, and Karl . . . I was so sad to hear that your mom had passed away. You all were so young when Lou and I as almost newlyweds bought the house across the street! I have so many warm memories of those early years – things like root beer floats, your dog Rags, and the bell calling everyone to dinner. Your mom was such a center of all that activity! As Walt and Greg arrived in those early years, all of you became part their memories, too. I lost my mom over 10 years ago so I know what a profound loss you are experiencing and please know that I will be thinking of you all.
