Obituary

Gloria Uhler, the incredible love of my life, passed away at her home September 4, 2022. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by close friends and family. She knew that her suffering would soon be over and she courageously accepted it.

Gloria was born September 8, 1946 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where her older sister, Rose, still lives. Gloria had two children, was the stepmother of two, and the step-grandmother of three.

Gloria was vibrant and an inspiration to everyone she met. Her talents abounded. As part of the Orange County Clay Guild, she fabricated many ingenious works of art and numerous inventive pieces of jewelry. She published an instructive book about the creative methods she used in her crafting. Gloria sewed extensively, constructing clothing for herself, family members and a great many others. She created multiple paintings and other works of art, many of which are displayed in her home. Throughout her advertising career, Gloria was an accomplished writer. After retiring, she co-wrote a screenplay which was made into a film. She was the definition of multi-talented.

Knowing she would soon pass, Gloria wrote: “I have been fortunate in so many ways. My years have been so richly textured and colorful. Sometimes they were wild and, in my view, extraordinary. I had one-of a-kind experiences, loving family, exciting travel, and a community of friends larger than I could ever have dreamed possible. Take a drink in hand for you, for me, for lives well lived. Dance around the room knowing that I’ve had the time of my life. That’s really something to celebrate!”

Gloria’s family and friends were so fortunate to have known and loved her. We will forever have a void in our hearts which she had so graciously filled.

Her wishes are to be cremated and have a portion of her ashes scattered near her childhood home in Massachusetts, the rest to remain at her home in Laguna Niguel.

A celebration of her life will be scheduled sometime in the near future.

To say that Gloria was a dear friend, a lifelong friend wouldn’t express strongly enough how I felt about her. More like family. We met in our very early teen years and enjoyed our friendship, sharing many, many fun moments and memories. “Life” separated us for a number of years but didn’t separate our friendship. Meeting up again at our class reunion a number of years back and this time, made sure to stay in close contact. Gloria has always been very talented, willing to share her knowledge and she always was just so very nice. May she rest now but know that she is already missed. Love you my friend. Our love to Ray. 2. Gloria was a talented artist, a bright woman with a great sense of humour and much more. She was also a sincere friend, always willing to share her knowledge. She was constantly at work with a project or another, so I know she cannot just sit back and do nothing even where she is now: I picture her crafting a new jewel or sewing something for her new home up there!
Gloria was a close friend, despite living on different continents. We met online through her site many years ago and since then we have exchanged hundreds of emails and messages. We visited each other only a few times, but still, the days we spent together in Italy and California were very happy and meaningful and they will remain a sweet memory for me. She will always have a special place in my heart. I already miss you, my dear friend!

My thoughts and prayers are with Ray and the entire family.

“Step-mom” didn’t sound endearing enough to me, so I came up with “Glo-mom” soon after she and Ray were married. I admired so many things about Glo-mom, a few of which are listed here:

    Embraced technology
-Embraced page layout in the early Mac days; fan of Apple every since
-Built and maintained her own website
-Used special software and devices to embroider & silkscreen
-Loved the tech of her Tesla

    Lovingly hand-made so many gifts
    -Made jewelry for our girls
    -Make custom Christmas ornaments
-Sewed matching Christmas dresses for our girls when they were young
-Made a custom soft-cover book the day after Audrey was born, with a photo of Audrey in it!

    Always finished her projects
-Decorating and painting rooms of the house. Every new house was a blank canvas.
-Craft projects for the Orange County Fair
    -Gifts for bdays and holidays

I remember one of Gloria’s favorite expressions, when describing something she really loved—such as the taste of an amazing food or a vacation of a lifetime—she would say it was “Out of this World!”

Well Gloria, to us that knew you, you were the one who was truly “Out of this World!”

  4. Gloria was beautiful inside and out! She was fun, talented, funny, giving, loving, and passionate!

She was incredibly creative. She could think it, and then figure out a way for it to be done! She became an expert in so many different types of crafts and hobbies.

She had a contagious laugh and a wonderful sense of humor.

I especially remember the large amount of time we spent together at one clay retreat. It was a precious time for us. We really got to know each other well, and to know Gloria, was to love her.

She was a great teacher and loved sharing her gifts, talents and toys. We had many precious times together when she was either teaching me one of her specialties, or we were just creatively playing and exploring ideas together.

We talked about life, family and love. She loved people, and Ray was clearly the love of her life. She just sparkled when she talked about him. They made each other so happy. They so completely enjoyed their time together, and it was so precious to watch them together. They were just so cute together!

It was torture for me not to see her, talk to her or hug her during her last months. I am grateful that we were able to email, and then sort of said our goodbyes in a text. It was definitely bittersweet.

She definitely made the world a brighter place. To say I miss her is an understatement! I think about her all the time. She left a huge hole in my heart and in the hearts of so many others!

So… CHEERS to you, my dear friend Gloria! Thank you for brightening my life. I love you! I always have and I always will!

I have nothing but warm, swell memories of all the time spent with Gloria and Ray working together on our filmmaking adventures. Spirited talks about movies and great dinners full of stories will always remain as fond memories. Nice, sweet, kind, considerate, dedicated, creative, diligent…the descriptors can go on and on, but put simply, Gloria was a unique, wonderful person. I feel privileged to have had her in my life, and she will be missed by all who knew her. My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Ray and all of their family. With much love from far away, ~ Alex
