Obituary

Gloria Ann (Turba) Biehl

On Wednesday March 1, 2023, Gloria Ann (Turba) Biehl left us to rest in peace at the glorious age of 98 and 340 days after a lifetime of love and loyal dedication to her family and her Catholic faith. Gloria, only child of Walter G. and Eulalia E. (Rouen) Turba, was born on March 26, 1924, in Ripley, New York. She spent her childhood and teen years in Long Beach and San Diego, California. She graduated from San Diego High School in 1942 where she was a WWII Girl’s Reserves volunteer which supported the U.S. armed forces fighting in WWII. Gloria married John Francis Biehl, Jr. in San Diego on February 24, 1945, who was enlisted in the U.S. Army. Gloria loyally and lovingly supported John who served valiantly in WWII’s Pacific battles and the Korean War. Gloria demonstrated her strength, fortitude, and loyalty to family and patriotism while being separated from her husband who was serving in the Pacific during their first 8 years of their marriage. Little did Gloria and John know that they were setting a wonderful example for two of their grandchildren whose families made similar significant sacrifices some 50 years later serving with the U.S. Marines in the Middle East and Africa.

Gloria and John were devout Catholics who instilled the importance of faith, family, hard work and patriotism in the five children they raised together – Mary (Robert) Irwin, Jeanne (Michael) Kelly – who predeceased Gloria on October 20, 2018, John (Laurie) Biehl II, Michael (Renee) Biehl and James (Ana) Biehl. Gloria was a devoted wife, loving mother, loyal parishioner, and reliable friend. For several years, she and her husband gave of themselves and their family to Big Brothers, mentoring and caring for disadvantaged youth. They also worked together to help many Catholic nuns immigrate from the one of the Philippine islands John fought on during WWII. They found the nuns a permanent home at St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado Canyon, California. For several years, they worked together to plan and lead a popular Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, “Mary’s Hour” in Anaheim, California. Gloria along with her husband was an ardent and out-spoken defender of the sanctity of human life.

She lived as a single woman for almost 39 years after her husband passed away. She spent her final years selflessly dedicated to faith and family – attending daily Mass, weekly Rosaries, and often providing daycare for many of her grandchildren. Thus, in the twilight of her life, Gloria once again demonstrated her strength, fortitude, and loyalty to family. Above all her proudest accomplishment was that, although an only child, she raised 5 wonderful children who brought her 15 beautiful grandchildren that she spent many years of her life caring for and adoring and she was able to hold and love many of her 24 great-grandchildren. Gloria’s incredible strength and fortitude, especially in her final years, were masked in a wonderful presence of quiet humility – a trait she and John instilled in each of their children. Gloria spent her final years courageously battling several illnesses and spent her final hours just as she would have wanted to – with family praying by her bedside.
