Obituary

Hughes, Gerald Edward, age 80, passed away on June 25th, peacefully at home after a valiant struggle against cancer. Gerald was born in Wellington, Ohio on February 5, 1928. He served in the U.S. Navy at the Great Lakes Naval Station and San Diego immediately following WWII. Gerald graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a degree in Electronics Engineering. He began his career at Raytheon in Waltham, Massachusetts, moved to California in 1958, and continued his career at Hughes Aircraft Company. Gerald finished his career in 1990 at Rockwell International in Anaheim. He was with Rockwell for 26 years.

Gerald married Janice Mead in 1958 and they raised four wonderful sons. Gerald is survived by Janice; his sons James, Stephen and Larry. He was preceded in death by Gerald Hughes, Jr. He is also survived by three grandchildren–Michael, Cathleen, and Juliana. A fourth grandchild is expected in December.

Visitations will be held at O’Connor Mortuary on Alicia Pkwy in Laguna Hills on Monday, June 30th from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 1st, at 10 a.m. at Santiago de Compostela Catholic Church in Lake Forest.

Gerald’s many interests included: geology, gemology, gardening, bowling, tennis, hiking, cycling, and researching all aspects of the paranormal. He followed and cheered on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for the last 47 years. Gerald will be greatly missed by colleagues, friends, and family. He loved finding and traveling the highways and byways of California and the Southwest with family and friends. He was extremely proud that all four of his boys graduated from various universities. His sons will forever remember his unselfish and loving involvement in all their sports, school activities, clubs, graduations, and life accomplishments.
