Obituary

Born Georgina Aburto on February 5, 1948 in Los Angeles, our mother would later be known by many names: Gina, Mom, George, Oma, Yia Yia, and more. Regardless what you called her, you will remember her for her smile, her laughter, her love of music and dancing, and her devotion to family and friends. On November 20, 2023, she left this earth and we began the difficult work of adjusting to a world without her sense of humor and zest for life. Her parents – George Aburto and Guadalupe Puentes – and three siblings – Alice Margaret Castaneda, Richard Aburto and Michael Aburto – went before her. She is survived by her sister Joanne (Richard) Negrete and the children she reared with Col. Cecil J. Amparán, USMC (Dec.): Lara (Keith) Nester, Karina (Rob) Gaughran, Zan Amparán and Alexis (Chris) Zavouris. Her grandchildren Tori and Dakota Amparán, Jake and Cooper Nester and Stella Zavouris will miss her tremendously. Her only great granddaughter Nora Daly had nearly a year to enjoy her hugs and kisses. Some of Gina’s favorite times were family gatherings including her cousins, many nieces and nephews and their growing families. She liked it even better whenever mariachis were involved. Her absence will be deeply felt as we gather to honor her on Sunday, December 10, 2023, but her memory will live on in our hearts. Flower arrangements may be sent through December 9 to O’Connor Mortuary at 25301 Alicia Parkway in Laguna Hills, California. The memorial service will be available for live viewing if you are unable to attend in person. For the video link, please email alexisamparan@yahoo.com. A reception will be held in Mission Viejo, California. Address to be provided at the memorial service.
