Obituary

Florence Teresa Scanlan, 84, aka Granny Flo, left us for heaven on October 11, 2015. She called Laguna Woods her home for the last 30 years. After dealing with dementia, and a lingering cold she succumbed at Mission Hospital, where she had worked as a registered dietician until she retired 10 years ago.

Florence was a woman of her own making. She was born in rural Kansas during the depression. She graduated from college when it was unexpected for a woman to do so. She established a strong career as a registered dietician, in Kansas City, MO Wichita, KS, and Mission Viejo, CA. She raised two daughters as single mom for most of their lives. She was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother, always putting them first. After retiring, she was able to fulfill her dream of travel, and went all over the world discovering and embracing different ways of life. She taught us all about family, and traditions. She had a wry sense of humor that even survived the dementia. As a devout Catholic, she was very involved in St. Timothy’s Parish in Laguna Niguel CA.

Florence is survived by her daughter, Ann; grandchildren Tabatha, Travis and Matthew; great granddaughter Alanna; and son-in-law Peter.

Services will be held at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church in Laguna Niguel on Nov. 23 at 10 am. Monetary donations can be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association.
