Obituary

Florence Marie Johnson 1930-2013

Florence Marie Johnson was born September 15, 1930 in Moundridge, Kansas to Richard and Zakiah Azim, both originally from Lebanon. She enjoyed all the fun of being part of a large family that included three brothers and two sisters.

Florence grew to adulthood in Wichita Kansas where she met and married Harold Johnson in 1950. Florence and “Johnny” were blessed with three children and in 1959 made the move to sunny California where two more children were added to their happy family.

The title of stay-at-home mom was one that Flo wore proudly and was able to enjoy for many years. Her children fondly remember her tireless love, support and warmth, as well as her bountiful and delicious home cooking of traditional Lebanese and American cuisine- not to mention her baking, which required a bottomless trash can sized container of flour. As a self-taught seamstress, she provided her five children with wonderful homemade clothes and Halloween costumes. Florence summoned endless energy to nurture her family and close friends.

After years at home Flo once again became a working mom, when she joined the U.S. Postal service in 1967. In her position as supervisor, Flo demonstrated the same dedication and care for her crew as she did for her family, often bringing in baked goods and the Lebanese cuisine that had become her trademark. It goes without saying that Flo was loved by all who had the opportunity to work for her.

In 1997 Florence retired and moved to Yuba City, California to be close to her bother Kay and his wife Shirley. Immediately Flo became involved in her church and spent much of her time volunteering with various Christian organizations in town. During her time in Yuba City and following her move back to Southern California in 2010, Florence had the blessing of living with her oldest daughter ViVi.

A continuous source of delight, amazement and love for Florence were all her beautiful grandchildren. She treasured the continuous stream of pictures and stories and the precious time she spent with each one. She would indulge them for hours with her undivided attention, fascinated with their sports and interests making them all feel special and secure.

Another one of Florence’s passions and special gifts was gardening. She tended her modest gardens the way she tended her family, with loving care. Even after working long hours she would spend more time in her garden pruning, watering, transplanting and shaping and like her children, her flowers blossomed.

She so loved dancing with her husband Johnny, and later in life with her son Chris and her son-in-law Michael. She enjoyed working on countless Rose parade Festival floats, making her coveted Baklava, popcorn balls, caramel apples and peanut brittle, solving crossword puzzles, and being selected and serving for jury duty-yes jury duty.

But beyond all the fond memories of her gifts and accomplishments, Florence will be remembered most as a woman of faith and devotion-a woman who sacrificed for her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her family and her friends. While never materially wealthy, Flo was rich beyond her wildest dreams. Her currency took the form of the love and admiration of all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her ever hopeful, wide-eyed child-like spirit. That spirit filled her until her last day, November 9th, 2013.

Florence was constantly amazed by God’s creation and even more amazed that people appreciated her true beauty. And yet, Florence Marie Johnson was God’s beauty, on display for 83 years for all to behold. She will be forever cherished and will live forever in our memories and in her eternal home, where she is no doubt, tending God’s garden.
