Obituary

Feico Richard August van der Laan, born April, 28, 1963, passed away on Oct 7, 2011.
Feico will sorely be missed and be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. Feico lived and attended school in England, Iran, the Netherlands and Belgium and came to the United States in 1979.

Feico was a happy child, surrounded by loving parents and four brothers and one sister. With an inquisitive mind, he built his first radio at the age of eleven, unwittingly developing a taste for
electronics. Feico could swim before he could walk and excelled in local diving competitions. He started playing golf in Iran, field hockey in Belgium and became a great golfer and skier in California.

As an adult he became a recreational pilot and tried his hand at countless activities: scuba diving, bungee jumping and sky diving.

Feico was always the life of the party. He made friends very quickly, not surprising considering his dynamic personality and keen sense of humor,

After obtaining a BS in Electronics Engineering from UC Santa Barbara in 1985, he became a successful and gifted electronics engineer, founding his own company, Laantech.
And, on the side, Feico invented and marketed his own automotive product, known as the V-map.

Feico married his long time girlfriend, Julie Yarbrough, in Laguna Beach, CA in 1999. He was a wonderful step-father to Melissa Jurado and five years later, became a proud father to Evan.

He enjoyed watching Formula One racing with his wife and son, creating high performance technology for his Audi S4, spending time with his wife and son on week-end excursions to Palm Springs and constructing Lego models with his son.

Feico is survived by his beloved wife, Julie, son Evan, age seven; step-daughter Melissa; mother Rosemary van der Laan; sister Sieuwke van der Laan and Dave Cobb; brother Alexander Dale and Helen; brother Thijs van der Laan and and Els de Jong; brother Achilles van der Laan and Maddie Delorie, brother Alexander van der Laan and Marieke Arink..

A memorial service will be held at O’Connor Mortuary (25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills, CA 92653) on Saturday, Oct 15 at 1 p.m.

A 529 College Savings Plan has been established for Evan’s education.

  1. For the past several years, Feico lived with his family right across the street from us, in Mission Viejo, CA.

As his neighbor, our memories will be of him working in his garage on his Audi, taking care of his lawn and front yard, playing with his young son Evan with their remote-controlled cars, and bringing Evan to and from school.

Feico would always smile and say hello whenever we saw him. We will miss him and the neighborhood will seem very different without him.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family.

Sincerely, The Frerichs; Neal, Vivian and Keith.

Today I learned that Feico is gone. I met Feico when we were just starting the Branded Products group at Western Digital. He represented one of the chip vendors we used. Feico and I hit it off pretty quickly – as it is rare to find a sales rep that designs stuff in his spare time – plus he was a pilot. I enjoyed our random lunches where he talked about his product ideas for Volvos, things he did with his son, his parents, and his desire to get a patent of his own. We shared our hardships – like my divorce – and got beyond them to talk about the positive things we were doing and hoped to do. I don’t socialize much – too much of a lab rat – and Feico was one of the few that I felt a connection with. I really am sad that he is gone from my life now. I wonder if I could have done anything to help him through his troubles as he helped me through mine. I will remember him always.

It was a shock for me to learn today that Feico has passed away. He was one of my sales reps in Souther CA. We went on several customer visits together, and I always found Feico fun to work with. As a sales rep he was very conscientious about his work.
We were both born overseas and we had a lot in common, Feico being Dutch and me Danish and both having traveled arouond the world a lot. I really liked Feico and shall miss him sorely. My condolences go out to his family.

I was saddened to hear of Feico’s passing from my mother earlier this month. I met Feico in Abadan in the early 70s. We had great times playing together, climbing on roof tops, etc. i got to see him in Houston a few years later. I’ve always cherished those memories. I will miss my friend. My sincerest condolences go out to his family.

    Jeff Hurley. 29 Dec 2011
