Obituary

Eric Hernandez’s broad and contagious smile consumed his mother’s delivery room even before he took his first breath. It is that overwhelming, beautiful smile that our family will keep dear to our hearts as we cope with saying good-bye to our son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and close friend.

Within our family he was known as ‘Guero’ or ‘Pecas’… loving terms for being pale and freckled. However, Eric had other nicknames that many of his friends will remember. During his Pop Warner Football days he showed true grit by playing with one arm in a cast, earning him the name ‘Casty’. Later in high school, many of his teammates called him the ‘Tin Man’, a friendly joke referring to the Wizard of Oz and his body’s need of – a can of oil – to get his skinny frame going. But what many may chose to remember him by, is what his football coaches at Los Amigos High School called him… ‘The Real Deal Hernandez’.

Eric was definitely the real deal! And he demonstrated that from almost day one, as he began pushing out of his mother’s womb during a family Thanksgiving dinner. Born the following day, November 29, 1996, he was blessed with an eagerness to learn and a desire to experience all the wonders of life.

At the young age of four, his passion for sports began, as he pushed his parents to enroll him in youth soccer. This led to an endless enthusiasm for sports that continued with T-Ball, Flag Football, Basketball… etc. There seemed to be no end to the seasons or sports Eric could play. As a teenager, Eric’s love for sports centered around Tackle Football and despite his slim build, Tin Man, was known for playing his heart out and never backing down from any opponent.

As a family, the passing of Eric reminds us of the biblical story of how the resurrected Jesus Christ joined two despondent travelers on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). These two men were trying to come to terms over Jesus’s recent crucifixion, yet when joined along the path did not recognize their Savior. However, after spending a short period of time talking and listening to Him along their way, the men finally came to realize that they were in the presence of Christ… and as soon as He was revealed, He vanished! Word of this miracle helped spread Christ’s New Covenant across the globe.

The collective family… Hernandez, Meza, Sceville & Drivers… are comforted by knowing that the miracle of Eric’s life will continue to spread the power of God’s Love and Grace beyond all of our years.

One of Eric’s goals this year was to raise enough money to purchase new football uniforms for his beloved varsity team. The family asks, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Los Amigos Football Boosters and help make that dream to come true.

  4. Praying for your family at the loss of your son Eric. In God’s hands, no more pain and anguish. This was written from my pastor’s wife who lost her son recently in the same way. May it bring you some comfort in the coming days as you grieve the loss of Eric.

God’s Word is real….it’s true…it’s reliable….it is HOPE. “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27

Father, there are circumstances that may be threatening our faith, our stability, our hope for healing, hope for better days. Your Word says that nothing is impossible with You – so I bring the Hernandez Family to you right now – and I ask for You – the Impossibility-Defeating God of the Universe do what no one else can do. Renew hope. Bring back the smiles. Comfort their broken hearts. Holy Spirit be with them. Hear our cries for mercy. Unleash those bound by forces beyond their ability to cope. Help us long for Heaven while living fully here and now. Open our hearts to all who grieve. I TRUST YOU. In Jesus’ name – the name I love above all others – Amen.”

Although I was never Eric’s teacher, my heart aches for your beautiful family. Danny..I am praying you… stay strong.

    Blessings,
    Mrs. Reynolds (Danny’s former teacher)
