Obituary
Edward L Stanton
November 11, 1938 – December 24, 2023
Fountain Valley CA
On Sunday December 24th Ed Stanton passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife of 68 years Blanche by his side.
Ed was born November 11, 1938, in Yuma Arizona to Richard (Whitey), and Edna Stanton, the Stanton family tracing its Yuma roots to the 1800s. Ed fondly remembered spending part of his early years with his grandparents who helped run the original Laguna Dam on the Colorado River. Ed would proudly tell you that he was a “Yuman“ being.
Ed excelled in school graduating at the top of his class. He attended USC where he earned both his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and later his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Case Western Reserve.
Ed’s early Engineering career was in Aerospace where Dr. Stanton played a unique role in the world of engineering. In the 1960s he was involved with the Apollo Space Program thru McDonnell Douglas Aerospace. Moving on to PDA Engineering in the mid-1970s, becoming a pioneer in Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) software. In 2013 the CEO of MSC Software, Dominic Gallello credited Dr. Stanton as being the “Father of PATRAN “, and of how the success of their company was enhanced because “Dr. Stanton had the confidence of the government that he could deliver critical new innovation “. Ed went on to share his experience and knowledge teaching classes at the Graduate School of Engineering at U.C.I. Ed was always generous with his greatest gift, knowledge.
What Ed loved most however was his family. The father of 5 sons, 18 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He would spend hours with each of the boys laying brick in his backyard, his little heaven on earth. All the grandkids learned how to construct a dodecahedron out in grandpa’s “hooch”.
Happiness for Ed included playing tennis, either on Thursday nights with friends or playing doubles with Blanche and occasionally with his big sister Lavern.
Growing up in Yuma Ed’s second family were the Garcia’s, Blanche’s eight brothers, sister Irma, mom Mary and father Ray. The Garcia Family Reunion, where love and affection abounded expanded to include Ed’s brother Ron and sister Lavern as well as other Stantons.
Ed’s world revolved around Blanche; they shared their life as partners raising their family and at times traveling the world to scientific conferences.
Ed is survived by Blanche, his brother Richard Charles, sons Nicholas, Edward C, Richard, Robert and Glenn. He is preceded in death by his grandson CPL Jordan Robert Stanton KIA Afghanistan, brothers Ron and Richard H (Sonny), sister Lavern, and his cunado and best friend Rick Garcia.
