Obituary

Edith Mary Almeida was born to Louis and Florence Azavedo on August 2, 1929 in Bombay, India. She was the second of five siblings (sisters Lucy, Beryl, Iona and brother Milton) and the last surviving member of her family. She was married to Archibald Almeida for fifty years and raised three daughters – Coral, Nora and Debbie.

She has two grandsons – Alexander/Melissa, Travis/Ileane and three adorable great grandchildren – Xavier, Judith and Evelyn.

In her teens, Edith got interested in sewing. After a long school day, she would walk to the tailor shop and collect scraps of fabric to sew dresses for her dolls.  Later, she was an apprentice to a dress designer and soon learned the art of tailoring. She started her own dress-making business. Her specialty was designing wedding gowns and became well known in the community for excellence in this field.  Her creativity knew no bounds. She could be anything from a seamstress to a hair-stylist to an excellent cook.

Edith believed in a simple life.  Her humility, faith and giving spirit touched the lives of many around her.

In conclusion, these short paragraphs cannot capture her love of life and true spirit.  She has left behind wonderful memories and will be deeply missed by her family and all who came to know her.

They say that memories are golden,

Well maybe that is true,

But we never wanted memories,

We only wanted you.

Coral/Gabriel, Nora/Jay and Debbie

My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Almeida family. I will always remember how friendly and welcoming Debbie’s mom was.

  2. Dearest Coral, Gaby, Nora, Jay, Debbie, Alex, Melissa, Travis, Ileane, Xavier, Judith and Evelyn,

Our hearts grieve with you on the loss of your dearest mum/grandmother/great grandmother. A. Edy was a very special person who emulated humility, goodness and a loving nature that left an indelible mark on those who were blessed to know her. Her home in Mumbai was Keith’s adopted home when he was little, and he was the lucky recipient of many of her many tasty treats! We were honored by her and Debbie coming to Canada for our wedding, and have many fond memories of times spent together over the years, including celebrating her and U. Archie’s 50th wedding anniversary.

She leaves behind a strong legacy in each of you, and we’re sure she’ll continue to watch over you from her Heavenly abode. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

    With Deepest Sympathies,
    Keith, Evelin and Isabelle

  3. I always remember Aunty Eddy sitting at her sewing machine, rhythmically moving her foot, creating the most soothing image of a woman so fulfilled by the act of creating a beautiful garment for a very special event. She was the very embodiment of love in action.
I also remember the severe allergy she had to handling raw eggs, as I child I could not understand how she couldn’t touch it but could eat it cooked, it seemed like something magical took place in her body. Most of all I will remember that she had a very forthright but caring nature foe anyone that was with her. She could empathize and sympathize while maintaining a very pragmatic view of the world. She made sense of it to me.

Our deepest sympathies, prayers and love to Coral, Nora, Debbie, Gaby, Jay, Alex, Melissa, Travis, Ilenae, Xavier, Judith and Evelyn. We have lost our dearest but have gained in her love for us.

Affectionately, Lisa, Donnie, Neil and Priya

    Dear Coral, Nora and Debbie,

When I heard the sad news of dear Aunty Eddy passing away, my heart was filled with grief as memories of all the good times spent at your place came flooding back. How my mother, Bernice looked forward to visiting her dear cousin, Eddy, just to spend some quality time and relaxed moments with her over a good cup of afternoon tea.

Etched in my heart forever, I hold the memory of Aunty Eddy stitching on her favorite sewing machine whilst happily chatting away with mom close to my heart. Not forgetting dear Uncle Archie who cracked us up with his jokes and showed us the love birds while we cousins bonded. That was a happy and carefree time filled with laughter, warmth and love.

With a heavy heart, I offer my deepest condolences to you and your families. May God grant you all the strength to bear her loss.

    To Aunty Eddy,
Thank you for always being gentle, warm hearted and loving. Watch over us from heaven and know how much you were loved and will be missed.
    Rest in peace.

With prayers, love and heartfelt sympathy,

    Anthony, Melanie and Lynn
