Obituary

Edith Mary Almeida was born to Louis and Florence Azavedo on August 2, 1929 in Bombay, India. She was the second of five siblings (sisters Lucy, Beryl, Iona and brother Milton) and the last surviving member of her family. She was married to Archibald Almeida for fifty years and raised three daughters – Coral, Nora and Debbie.

She has two grandsons – Alexander/Melissa, Travis/Ileane and three adorable great grandchildren – Xavier, Judith and Evelyn.

In her teens, Edith got interested in sewing. After a long school day, she would walk to the tailor shop and collect scraps of fabric to sew dresses for her dolls.  Later, she was an apprentice to a dress designer and soon learned the art of tailoring. She started her own dress-making business. Her specialty was designing wedding gowns and became well known in the community for excellence in this field.  Her creativity knew no bounds. She could be anything from a seamstress to a hair-stylist to an excellent cook.

Edith believed in a simple life.  Her humility, faith and giving spirit touched the lives of many around her.

In conclusion, these short paragraphs cannot capture her love of life and true spirit.  She has left behind wonderful memories and will be deeply missed by her family and all who came to know her.

They say that memories are golden,

Well maybe that is true,

But we never wanted memories,

We only wanted you.

Coral/Gabriel, Nora/Jay and Debbie

    Dear Debbie, Nora and Coral

Was saddened to hear of mum going home to be with the Lord. She was such a wonderful person and her presence will be missed.

She does remain alive though, in the wonderful memories we carry.

    Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Grant eternal rest unto A Eddy, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on her, may her soul rest in peace, Amen. May the Lord keep A Eddy in His loving care always. Rest in Peace- A Eddy.

  4. With pain in my heart I must say goodbye to my dearest cousin Edie . Since my young days I spent years visiting her almost everyday . She was always so kind and polite to everyone always sharing our traditional East Indian food as she was such an excellent cook. She was an expert at dressmaking and I often would go to see the finished brides dresses . I use to argue and insist she charge more for the beauty of the finished dress but she didn’t mind that all her making charges were discounted. She could have made her fame and fortune from her dress making but she always put her family first . Her energy guidance and love for her 3 lovely daughters I always admired. My children always had a deep respect and love for their aunty Edie . Then she left for the USA and it took us a while to get use to that . We missed her every single day we passed her home . We kept in touch . We grieve today with Coral Nora Debbie and Gabby and Jay . May her soul Rest In Peace . Amen .
