Obituary

Edith Mary Almeida was born to Louis and Florence Azavedo on August 2, 1929 in Bombay, India. She was the second of five siblings (sisters Lucy, Beryl, Iona and brother Milton) and the last surviving member of her family. She was married to Archibald Almeida for fifty years and raised three daughters – Coral, Nora and Debbie.

She has two grandsons – Alexander/Melissa, Travis/Ileane and three adorable great grandchildren – Xavier, Judith and Evelyn.

In her teens, Edith got interested in sewing. After a long school day, she would walk to the tailor shop and collect scraps of fabric to sew dresses for her dolls.  Later, she was an apprentice to a dress designer and soon learned the art of tailoring. She started her own dress-making business. Her specialty was designing wedding gowns and became well known in the community for excellence in this field.  Her creativity knew no bounds. She could be anything from a seamstress to a hair-stylist to an excellent cook.

Edith believed in a simple life.  Her humility, faith and giving spirit touched the lives of many around her.

In conclusion, these short paragraphs cannot capture her love of life and true spirit.  She has left behind wonderful memories and will be deeply missed by her family and all who came to know her.

They say that memories are golden,

Well maybe that is true,

But we never wanted memories,

We only wanted you.

Coral/Gabriel, Nora/Jay and Debbie

I always called you ‘mum’ because you were not just mummy to my two good friends but you were so kind so gracious and not having my own mother here …I loved you like my own. You brought joy to everyone who had the good fortune of knowing you. I shall miss you…at Bingo at Valley View …in your Home. You had an amazing life and I’m glad that you are finally reunited with your love and family who went before you. We shall all meet again and in the meantime…please watch over us and know that we love you

  2. The loss of a dear mum at any age is not easy and I extend my deep sympathies to Nora, Coral and Debbie – my childhood friends. I remember A Edith for her kindness and generosity and always admired her humility, love of family, her strong morals and sense of duty. I hope you will continue to celebrate her life and remember all the wonderful times you shared over the years.

Sending you love, thoughts and prayers at this time and I’m sure A. Edith will find eternal rest and peace in heaven.

Edith/(Aunty) Edie as we knew her, was like this candle. She brought the light of joy and love to all the lives she touched – her family, friends, neighbours, customers…the list goes on. She was a dutiful and loving wife, a wonderful mother to her three beautiful daughters and a doting grandmother/great-grandmother.

(Aunty) Edie has been one of most talented women we’ve known, from the beautiful wedding gowns she sewed to the amazing goodies she cooked at Christmas! She was a wonderful friend and companion especially to the senior women in the neighbourhood (we almost had our own private club!). We shared a deep Christian faith and enjoyed our chats on our 4-kilometre walkathons to Mount Mary’s Basilica in Bandra, the neighbouring suburb every year. She also shared the excitement of festivals with us as we chatted and walked the street at midnight to and from church services during Christmas and Easter.

In recent years, life had separated us, taking us to two corners of the world, but the distance did not weaken our friendship or our fond memories. As we part ways with Edith in this life and pray her soul has eternal rest, we say, “You have and always will stay in our hearts (Aunty) Edie. We celebrate your life and cherish what you gave to us until we meet again….”

Our thoughts, wishes and prayers are with Coral, Nora, Debbie and the rest of the family at this time of grief.
