Edith M.
Bowman
July 4, 1920 – July 17, 2020
Edith Markowitz Bowman was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 4, 1920 to Minnie and Louis Markowitz. When she was a small child, the family which included her sister Alice, moved to Inglewood, CA. Her father and uncle started the clothing and accessory stores called Marbros.
Edith attended Inglewood public schools and upon graduating Inglewood High School, she went to the University of California Santa Barbara where she studied elementary education. Upon graduating she went to work for Los Angeles Unified School District as an elementary school teacher. She enjoyed working one on one with students, so she became a guidance counselor which eventually led to the position of Guidance Supervisor for the South Area of LAUSD.
In 1964 she married Howard Bowman who was the Director of Evaluation and Research for LAUSD. When she married Howard, she became stepmother to his daughters Barbara and Carol.
Howard and Edith both retired from LAUSD in 1972 and enjoyed the retired life of traveling and relaxing until Howard's death in 1989.
Edith decided to take a big step after Howard's death. She sold her house and moved to Freedom Village in Lake Forest, CA. She felt that Freedom Village would be a good fit for her lifestyle and it turned out to be just that. She lived at Freedom Village until her death on July 17, 2020.
Edith is survived by her stepdaughter Carol Bowman, son-in law John Murray, granddaughter Laurel Murray, grandson Bob Murray and his wife Natalie, great grandchildren Reagan Murray and Elena Murray and nephew David Spencer of Macon, GA.
Edith reached the milestone of 100 years on July 4, 2020.
