Obituary

Edgar Howard Compton II, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024, at his home in Irvine, CA.  He was born on August 4, 1943 in Los Angeles, California to Edgar and July Crandall Compton.

Ed’s journey through life was marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.  On September 9, 1966 he married the love his life, Charlene Marie Koopmans at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Paramount, CA.  Their marriage, achieving 57 years together, was a testament to the strength of their bond and stood as an example to all who knew them.

Ed graduated from Paramount High School and attended Compton College.  In 1966, he was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served as a Military Policeman.  He was stationed in South Korea and served a year there as Security at a Nike Hercules Missile Base.  At the rank of E5 Sergeant, he was discharged in October, 1968.

Ed was a Detective for the Downey Police Department for 31 years when he retired in 2001.  He served in many positions in the Detective Bureau including Burglary, Homicide and Narcotics.   Polygraph and Ultra-lite Surveillance were additional positions for which he was trained.

Not only was Ed dedicated to his family and career, he made a significant contribution to his community.    He was a member of Lake Hills Community Church serving as an Elder and Chairman of the Missions Committee.  He traveled with Charlene to Kenya to observe the Churches established there.  He was dedicated to helping children at the Door of Faith Orphanage in La Mission-Baja California with sponsorships of four orphaned siblings.   Part of his mission was inviting others to travel with him to experience Door of Faith for themselves.   At the time of his passing, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Master.

Ed had a passion for motorcycles, firearms and vintage cars.  He loved football and attending events with his children and grandchildren.  His love for travel took him to every continent including visits to Russia, India, Turkey, England, China and Europe and especially The Netherlands to visit Charlene’s family,

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Charlene Marie, their children Edgar III (Michele), Steven (Christine), Christina and Michael (Tami).  He was a cherished Grandfather to Ian, Sophia, Damon DeCino, Kira, Jeremiah and Emma.  His love for his family was immeasurable and he created a legacy of love and devotion that will endure for generations.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to have donations made in Edgar Compton’s name to Door of Faith Orphanage, PO Box 6434, Chula Vista, CA 91909.  Website is www.dofo.org .

Rest in peace, dear Ed, knowing that your legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known you.
