Obituary

Dorothy Servis Chandler Newby.  Born March 19, 1907; died September 4, 2005 at home after several months of declining health.  Daughter of Lillian Long and Leland B. Servis; sister of Robert M. Servis Dorothy and Helen Servis; wife of Lewis Whitney Chandler 54 yrs; mother of Barbara Landauer of San Francisco and Sara Regan Donald of Balboa; grandmother of Timothy Chandler Regan Robin; Dennis Tighe Regan Laurie, Tina Regan Thomas David, and Matthew Whitney Regan Lara; wife of John H. Jack Newby 7 yrs; great grandmother of Timothy and Kyle Regan; Katie, Whitney and Sean Regan; Conner, Tighe, Brent and Caroline Thomas; Molly and Emily Regan. 

Dorothy, Dode or Grandma Dodie remained the eternal Flapper, ready to fox trot or jitterbug; avidly and expertly play at the bridge table; attend meetings and parties of the Bookworms of the Assistance League, Pan-Hellenic, Church Circle or Chi Omega; tend to her garden of gorgeous roses; or join in the many family gatherings and trips.  Her love of life did not falter while loving and nursing first a husband in a wheelchair 36 yrs and then a husband with an amputated leg 5 yrs.  By her example of strength of character and deed, practical approach to life’s vagaries, and can do attitude, she was the inspiring family Matriarch and mentor to her friends.  Plus, she had the world’s softest hands.  We will miss holding those hands, and the direction in which they pointed us.  May God hold her in the palm of His hand and may all of you be blessed with such an inspiration in your family.  A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 27th 11:00 am at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Newport Beach with a Celebration of Her Life to follow at the Balboa Bay Club.  In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation to the Assistance League of Los Angeles or a charity of your choice that aids the people adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina.
