Doris Dee
Schroeder
September 17, 1918 – April 19, 2013
Doris Dee Tabor Schroeder was born in Maryville, MO on September 17, 1918 to Mark and Golda Hiles, and passed away on April 19, 2013.
Doris graduated from Northwest Missouri State University, married John Tabor, and had two daughters, Teresa (Griffith) and Patricia (Vallat). John died young, and Doris raised her daughters alone; she put both through college while simultaneously earning her own master's and doctorate degrees in education. She spent over 40 years as a professor and taught at the University of Nebraska and Cal State Long Beach.
After she retired, Doris married the second love of her life, Robert Schroeder; the two traveled extensively, visiting scores of countries, and Doris had opportunity to ride camels in Morocco and elephants in Thailand. Doris had a great zest for life. She adored her family'especially her grandchildren Andrew and Alyssa Vallat. She made friends easily and often, and she reveled in her role as a professor and in her participation in groups like Mother Singers, Zonta International, and her sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. She felt especially privileged to be a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross, whose pastors and staff provided great solace over the years.
Perhaps her greatest burden was the death of daughter Patricia in 2006'a burden which will be lifted when the two meet in Heaven.
Memorial service at 11:00am on Saturday, May 4, at Freedom Village, 23442 El Toro Road, Lake Forest, CA.
