  1. Blessed By You

My name comes as a challenge to most and I have my grandpa to thank for that. It produces the wrinkling of the forehead and the scrunching of the cheeks to every grocery store cashier who questions it as they hand me my receipt. It is the confusion on the teacher’s face as they say it out loud and the laughter that follows from me in the crowd. Eight letters and two syllables wide. This challenge has followed me my entire life.

My name resembles a map of Denmark spread out on the family dining room table, where only the magic of a magnifying glass can make it appear. It’s the stitching on blankets, the writing on mugs, and the smell of hello dollies. It’s a Wednesday night filled with blue hair dye, grandpa’s golf cart rides, and grandma’s spaghetti spilt on my jeans. It’s the holding of hands as we say a prayer and the goofy group photos that make people stare. This is what PLEJDRUP means. It connects us one by one. From nose kisses to grandpa’s bear hugs we are a family of love.

There are rules to holding this name. Weird and wacky are a must and knowing the Plejdrup wave goodbye is a plus. Thumb to nose is where you start then wiggle your fingers out in front. Pickledrips is what we like to say when others don’t know how to pronounce it the right way. Start with “pledge” and end with “drup” or you can just make something up. My name is something that most people find funny, but to me it’s what defines family. Proud, loving, exciting, joy, dorks, real, unique, and perfection. This is what makes up the letters of my name. Although at times I wish it was easier to say, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Family is life’s greatest blessing and our grandpa blessed us with this name and for that I will forever be thankful. Not only do I share his name but we share an amazing family he created filled with goof balls, endless laughter, unforgettable moments, and most importantly love. So yes, my name comes as a challenge to most but it is a challenge I’m proud to accept.

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” – Mark 10:9

    I love you Grandpa.
