David Arthur
Smith
April 9, 1946 – May 9, 2026
David Arthur Smith, age 80, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
David was born on April 9, 1946, in Aruba, where he was raised and formed lifelong friendships and memories that he cherished throughout his life. He loved sharing stories about growing up on the happy island and remained deeply connected to his classmates, friends, and extended community there.
A Vietnam War-era veteran, David carried a deep appreciation for military history throughout his life and was an avid war history enthusiast. He was known for his remarkable storytelling, sharp memory, and ability to captivate family and friends with tales from his life, history, and his beloved Aruba.
David devoted more than 40 years of his professional life to a career in banking, where he was respected for his dedication, integrity, and work ethic.
Above all else, David loved his family deeply. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose steady presence and unwavering love shaped the lives of those around him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Ellen Smith; his children, Neil Smith, Tricia Kerr, Catherine Hamilton, and Julia Smith; and his nine cherished grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Donald Smith, Kathleen Britton, and Glenn Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Terry and Agnes Smith.
In April 2025, David was diagnosed with lung cancer that had metastasized to his bones. Throughout his illness and treatments, he remained incredibly strong and resilient. Just one month before his passing, David celebrated his 80th birthday and was deeply touched to receive heartfelt video messages and well wishes from so many Aruba classmates, colleagues, friends, and family members.
On the day before he passed, David and Ellen celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary together with In-N-Out burgers and a chocolate shake, a simple, joyful moment that perfectly reflected the love and companionship they shared.
Though our hearts are broken and he will be missed terribly, we find comfort in knowing he is now at peace, resting and watching over all of us.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to research for the American Cancer Society in David’s memory.
