Obituary
Daniel Joseph Young – Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, coach, golfer, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home with his family at his side, October 15, 2009. He was 92 years young. Dan was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 22, 1917 to parents Helen and Stanislaw. He graduated from Ohio University, attended Notre Dame Naval Mid-Shipman’s School and served as a U.S. Navy officer aboard a mine-sweeper in the Pacific in World War II. In California he met his life-long love, Mary Lee, a San Bernardino, California native, a beautiful young dancer who would tour with the USO during the war. They were married from January 16, 1944 until his passing.
After the war Dan and Mary Lee settled in San Bernardino. Dan worked as a teacher for 35 years at Pacific High School where he taught mathematics and was a CIF Championship golf coach. He also taught at San Bernardino Valley College and later at the University of California Irvine, where he was a lecturer in the Teacher Education Department.
After retiring from teaching, he and Mary Lee settled in Laguna Niguel, California, where he enjoyed his family, playing golf, and joking with friends, new and old.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Lee; his three children, Tim, Christie, and Jim and daughter-in-law Kathy; his five grandchildren, Alicia, Danny, Jimmy, Joey and Marisa; and his two great-grandchildren, Kiley and Jason; and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand and great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Helen and his brothers George and Flory.
A service will be held Friday ? October 23rd ? 11:00am, at Saint Edward’s Catholic Church, 33926 Calle La Primavera, Dana Point, CA 92629. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to University California Irvine Towne and Gown Scholarship Fund, PO Box 4192, Irvine, CA, 92616; or Las Buenas Amigas, P.O. Box 810, San Juan Capistrano, CA , 92693; or Assistance League of San Bernardino, 580 W. 6th Street, San Bernardino, CA, 92410; in memory of Dan. There will be a gathering at the Brio Restaurant in Dana Point following the service.

Tim and family, I was so sad to see the passing of your dad in the OC Register. His picture brought back so many memories of my high school years at Pacific. He was my favorite teacher, as I hated math, but he always made it fun. He was such a gentleman, and always had a twinkle in his eye. I did not realize that he had gone down to UCI or I might have looked him up just to tell him how much I appreciated his patience with me. I am sorry for your loss, but happy that I had the joy of being one of his students. I will let my parents know, as well. My very best to all, Sandy Davis Kay

I graduated in 1961 and have fond memorites of Mr. Young. Your father and husband had a significant impact on many of the students that went through Pacific. I hope that he appreciated how much we liked him and respected him. Strangely, last Friday I was playing golf and in conversation with the opponents. For some reason I began to share stories concerning your father and husband. I remember telling them of many of the times that Mr. Young had shared his wisdom with a bunch of young men not only as a teacher, but also as a role model and friend. Those days are gone, but the memories are still with us. His influences are his lasting legacy.

Mary Lee, Tim, Christie and Jim, I am so very sorry for your loss. Dan Young was a legend for all of us who had the priviledge of attending his classes. I feel especially fortunate to have grown up with your family and then been one of Mr. Young’s students. Mary Lee, my mom would always let me know that the two of you would ask about me and it was great to hear how happy and well you both were doing. What a great thing to have found a life partner like Danny Young. He had such a impact on those who knew him. He was one of the very best.
