Dan Dunham could not have been a better friend to my father, George Yardley. What an extraordinary man! He was the most generous and giving friend anyone could ask for in a relationship. I want to mention just a few things that Dan did that I remember the most.
Golf balls-He had balls specially designed with my dad’s caricature and the basketball hall of fame logo for his birthday.
Lunch everyday- he promised that the day dad was diagnosed with ALS that he would meet him for lunch everyday. Usually at Chant Žclair dad’s choice but finally Dan would have to branch out to Bistango
Adoption papers- he adopted our dad on his last birthday with papers, baby bottle, pacifier, etc. I called him Grandpa.
Phone calls Dan would call every Saturday, no matter what. Paris, New Orleans, New York, Italy. He would call from around the country and the world.
Cigarettes- I’ll never forget the day that we went to lunch and Dan wanted to drive my dad home. I didn’t understand at the time, but the two of them hauled off in the convertible. My father had quit smoking and when my dad got home he smelled of cigarettes. At first, I was so mad at Dan and then I realized what a great friend he really was. How much longer did George have and what harm at this point would a cigarette do? My dad had such a great smile on his face when they returned.
I can only hope that they are having a toast together as they look down upon all of us and are laughing at one of their awful jokes.
Our entire family wants to send our condolences. We can only plan to have a friend like Dan in our lifetime.

Dan and I had a running joke. He interviewed me for a job and chose someone else. A year later, he hired me. One day, he confessed that he thought I’d want to much money. I admitted I would have accepted the job for less than my predecessor. Ever generous, he said it was his biggest mistake.
I worked for Dan for few years before leaving CA. He was the best. He was always encouraging, always positive and never an angry word. He will be missed.

Dan’s friendship touched my family. My Mom & Dad often spoke of his kindness, generosity and sense of humor. He was a true friend to many people, even in difficult times, showing love and support to his friends. He will be missed by many.
