1934-2016
Charles P. Melfi, 81, of Irvine, CA, was born in Fulton, NY, on August 7, 1934 and passed away in Irvine, CA on February 24, 2016.
He was a graduate of the University of Michigan and worked as an engineer for The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, CA. He began his engineering career working on the Atlas Rocket and later worked on Global Positioning System satellites and alternative energy projects.
He is survived by Ann Lambert Melfi, his wife of 53 years; his daughter, Lisa Bain and her husband, Stephen, of Denver, CO; his son, Michael, of Irvine; and 2 grandchildren, Nicholas and Eleanor Bain of Denver.

Cousin Chuck and I corresponded back and forth last year, catching up on milestones in the family, where everyone’s living now, Mom’s passing (my mom was his aunt), finishing myPhD, hIs latest health report, connecting his son John, a lawyer, with cousin Patrick in Chicago, also a lawyer. Chuck made a project of tracing the Melfi family tree and connected with the cousins in Italy and related Melfis who turned up in surprising places. He was warm and witty and enjoyed his life, and I am thankful I got to know him a bit. Last I heard from him, he and wife Ann had quite a lot of Bridge-playing on the social calendar. May he rest in peace.

Ann, Lisa, Michael and grandchildren:
So sorry for the loss of your dear husband and father. A Fulton High School classmate of his, Velma Kirsch, called me just yesterday (3/3) with news of his passing.
I am Martha Melfi Ours. My dad, Tony, was a brother of your dad’s father, Charlie. I knew you dad as “Chick”; there were three Charles’ in the family with him, his dad and his grandfather. I have photo of your dad at age 9, holding me, age two months, on the lawn of the “old homestead” in Fulton, April 1943. My dad was killed in action January 1945.
Your dad corresponded with my step-brother, Phil, about the Melfi family. Phil took my mom, Martha, to Milan to visit Cacchio cousins, whom your dad had located and visited. He really helped fill out our family tree, and will be missed.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Charles in person, we spoke on the phone and corresponded via mail and email. Charles provided me with some much needed advice on how to make contact with relatives in Italy on our grandmothers (Caccio) side of the family. My mother always wanted to visit with Giovanni and Flora Caccio, as our uncle Tony, Mom’s first husband, visited with them often when he was in Italy during the war. With thoughtful guidance from Charles, I was able to make the connection and bring my mother for a long overdue visit in 2003. This was just one of the ways that Charles made the world a better place. Charles, you were a kind and generous man and you will be missed.
