Obituary

Charles Patrick Popovich
July 27, 1948 to April 14, 2020

Charles Patrick Popovich passed away on Tuesday, April 14 at 9 pm after a long bout with cancer.  He was surrounded by his loving family in his final days.  He passed peacefully, listening to some of his favorite music, with his children by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mildred Popovich.  His wife of 38 years, Joni Popovich, passed December 16, 2012.

He is survived by his 3 children – Carrie Cisneros, Misha Popovich, and Ryan Popovich.  They are supported in this time of loss by their spouses – Michael Cisneros, Aaron Lohrbach, and Noi Popovich.  He had five grandchildren – Marilyn Love, Katie Love, James Love, Daniel Popovich, and Matthew Popovich.  He had two great-grandchildren from his grandson James and wife Franki – Aurora and Astrid Love.  He is also survived by his four siblings and their families – Andrew Popovich, Wayne Popovich, John Popovich, and Patricia Fox.  His sister-in-law, Barbara McMichael, and his many cousins, nieces, and nephews also share in mourning his loss.  His family was large and spread out across the country, but he did his best to maintain relationships with them all.  He was a loved man by all who knew him, and he truly valued his family and friends.

Chuck, as he liked to be called, spent 36 years working for United Parcel Service before retiring at age 55. He loved to spend time with his family, travel, listen to music, and loved sports-both watching and participating.  An avid golfer in his retirement years, he also loved to snorkel, play tennis, and go deep sea fishing.  He loved watching the Dodgers, college football, and was a big fan of USC.  He loved attending live music shows. Whether classical or classic rock, he liked his music played loud.  His travels with family included many vacations to his favorite destination, Hawaii, and other places around the world.

His faith in God was constant and provided great comfort and strength during the difficult times.  He shared that faith with his children, who are grateful to know that he is finally home with the Lord and reunited with his wife and the family that went before him.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no formal ceremony will be held at this time.  There will be a memorial service and celebration of life when restrictions are lifted.  In lieu of sending flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to his favorite charity, Samaritan’s Purse.

    Mom & Dad:
Charles, Andrew, Wayne, John and Trish: Chuck you are the first born in our little tribe. You are not allowed to leave. I feel a void – a giant hole where your name should rest. Dad left with Esophageal cancer, Mom left with Lung cancer and now you with Stomach cancer. Say ‘Hello” to Momma and Daddy.
Too many years between us: I didn’t really get to know you in this life. 17 1/2 years older than I. I am closer to Carrie’s age than to yours. Much to my disappointment, we were not close. I yearned for closeness from all of my brothers. I always felt like an only child. In these last few years, it became apparent to me that you were a beautiful human being. One that I tragically missed out on sharing! I was tormented with throughout your illness. I was amazed at your positive conviction, your strength, your true ability to endure and keep on fighting. Your integrity, your grit and the simple love of family was evident in all of your decisions. I am absolutely positive that God welcomed you with loving arms into heaven. I will miss your smile, your bright eyes and your sweet disposition. I deeply love and care for you.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Chuck was my favorite UPS boss in Feeder Scheduling. He was not only my boss but my wonderful friend. He will be missed and always remembered. Rest In Paradise Chuck

  4. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Popovich family. I’ve been blessed to have prayed with and talked to Mr. Popovich for many years (over the phone) as he would provide clean water to orphans and families in need all over the world every month for years through World Vision. I didn’t have a chance to reach out to the family until today I found this website. May God comfort you and be with you during times of tears of sadness and also times of rejoicing knowing he is pain free and in heaven with his precious wife. I learned a lot about being strong through his battles with cancer and how to balance tough times with good times as he would share about his golfing and just pushing cancer to the side. The legacy of Charles Popovich will continue for generations all over the world as he impacted people in so many ways. God bless, Millie Vanderpool, World Vision
