Obituary

Charles Patrick Popovich
July 27, 1948 to April 14, 2020

Charles Patrick Popovich passed away on Tuesday, April 14 at 9 pm after a long bout with cancer.  He was surrounded by his loving family in his final days.  He passed peacefully, listening to some of his favorite music, with his children by his side.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mildred Popovich.  His wife of 38 years, Joni Popovich, passed December 16, 2012.

He is survived by his 3 children – Carrie Cisneros, Misha Popovich, and Ryan Popovich.  They are supported in this time of loss by their spouses – Michael Cisneros, Aaron Lohrbach, and Noi Popovich.  He had five grandchildren – Marilyn Love, Katie Love, James Love, Daniel Popovich, and Matthew Popovich.  He had two great-grandchildren from his grandson James and wife Franki – Aurora and Astrid Love.  He is also survived by his four siblings and their families – Andrew Popovich, Wayne Popovich, John Popovich, and Patricia Fox.  His sister-in-law, Barbara McMichael, and his many cousins, nieces, and nephews also share in mourning his loss.  His family was large and spread out across the country, but he did his best to maintain relationships with them all.  He was a loved man by all who knew him, and he truly valued his family and friends.

Chuck, as he liked to be called, spent 36 years working for United Parcel Service before retiring at age 55. He loved to spend time with his family, travel, listen to music, and loved sports-both watching and participating.  An avid golfer in his retirement years, he also loved to snorkel, play tennis, and go deep sea fishing.  He loved watching the Dodgers, college football, and was a big fan of USC.  He loved attending live music shows. Whether classical or classic rock, he liked his music played loud.  His travels with family included many vacations to his favorite destination, Hawaii, and other places around the world.

His faith in God was constant and provided great comfort and strength during the difficult times.  He shared that faith with his children, who are grateful to know that he is finally home with the Lord and reunited with his wife and the family that went before him.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no formal ceremony will be held at this time.  There will be a memorial service and celebration of life when restrictions are lifted.  In lieu of sending flowers, the family has requested donations to be made to his favorite charity, Samaritan’s Purse.

  1. Dad you are my hero! I miss you so much! I will always cherish the memories of my childhood visits and vacations and also these last years. I hope you can read comments somehow from heaven. Thank you Dad for battling cancer so bravely. Thank you for the 3 more years you gave all of us. What a fighter you are! You blessed us with vacations, concerts, outings, prayers, golfing adventures told around the dinner table…. it was an honor and blessing to walk through this cancer valley with you. We all miss you- our home feels empty without you here. I love you so much!

  2. Jim Maki says:

Chuck and I became really good friends in 2008. He and Joanie had moved in next door and when I took up golf that year he came over with a 5 gallon pail of golf balls he had collected and literally launched me on my golf career. He and I would share driving chores where ever we had tourneys and got to know each other pretty good. I had retired from the Post Office and he from UPS so we had a few discussions as you can imagine but all in jest. He was always there to help me get better at golf and I would help him around his house with things he really didn’t want to do, it was a good blend of personalities. I will truly miss him. Rest in peace good friend and golfing buddy.
