Obituary

Cowan, Dr. Charles Michael – passed away on Monday, October 20th, 2008. Dr. Cowan began a successful Cardiology practice at St. Bernadine’s Community Hospital in 1972 serving the greater Inland Empire for many years. He later moved to Laguna Beach with his beloved wife, Jeanien Cowan, where he continued to work as a Cardiologist at Kaiser Permanente of Riverside. He was born June 25, 1934 in Jersey City to the parents of Joseph and Rebecca Cowan. Dr. Cowan graduated from Ohio State University; completed medical school at New Jersey College of Medicine; had internships and residencies at Beth Israel Hospital in New York City, Grady Hospital in Atlanta and a fellowship in Cardiology in Detroit; and served on the faculty of the School of Medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit. Charles Cowan was an adventurer, athlete, and a lover of life. He enjoyed white-water rafting, running, fishing, skiing, swimming, and even built his own aircraft, the ‘VariViggen’, which he flew for many years out of Rialto Airport. He ran marathons, completed the ‘Iron Man’ in Hawaii, and also finished the ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ Triathlon in San Francisco. As a traveler, he ventured to the ends of the earth and back with his beloved wife, Jeanien. Most importantly, Charles Cowan held, as the closest things to his heart and as his highest principles, the importance of family, togetherness, and the sharing of meaningful time with the people you love. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Sherry and John Hanover; son and daughter-in-law Billy and Supranee Cowan; step-children Jennifer and Brian Buck and Brandon Haber; brother Ken Cowan; grandchildren, Sidney, Jacob, and Carter. The family will accept visitation on Sunday, October 26th at O’Connor Mortuary in Laguna Hills, California between the hours of 7 and 9pm. A general funeral service will be held on Monday, October 27th at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Laguna Beach at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to the American Heart Association.

I met Dr Cowan when he was an interventional cardiologist at St Bernardine Medical Center where I worked with him. Later we met again at Kaiser Riverside. He was always kind and caring with a sense of humor. He shall be missed.

  2. To the memory of, and in honor of, Charles Michael Cowan, a great man. I am so sorry for your loss! No words are adequate to soothe your hearts at a time such as this, but for certain this world has lost a fine man. A Godly man of virtue, knowledge, morality, nobleness and worth of character.
Charles..just as his name implies, one who is strong and of manly character. He was that and more.
He had many virtues which truly are deserving of recognition and praise.
What a kindly, warm, loving, gentle, affectionate man. To have the pleasure of meeting him was to like him immediately and hope to get to know him better. He was gracious, friendly and hospitable.
He was a hard working man…one who followed the dream of his heart to become a Doctor so he could help others!
A man who spoke lovingly, affectionately and generously lavished praise about his children and those he loved.
Charles was a pricless gift to his children, his family and friends, his patients, his staff and associates, but most of all to his darling wife, Jeanien; his love!
From the moment he met her she ravished his heart! When she entered the room he did not have eyes for anyone else. She blessed him and he gave her all he had.
Like Joseph in the Scriptures he was delighted and honored to give her everything.. and his best gift was his heart of love, followed by his total commitment and loyalty.
He was a man to keep his word and he lived his word! No presents could be enough, but the absolute best gift he had to give was himself, and that is what he gave to Jeanien. No strings attached. She did not have to earn his love. He just gave it freely. Just him and all he possessed. He was her bridegroom and he was hers, by spoken vows and by law.
They were promised to one another, for now…for always! They are living out their promise!
Let us who loved them remember their love and treasure the memory of what they shared.
We witnessed and enjoyed their love here… and now they have gone to God and the promise they leave us is that their cord will never be broken! In Heaven they are together forever! They are living the sure Word of God and one day, perhaps one by one, one at a time, we will join them and there will be a happy reunion and a time of great rejoicing.
Charles, we hold your memory dear and you will never be forgotten!

  3. I met Dr Cowan on his first day at Kaiser Riverside & the first thing I noticed was his smile. Every time I would run into him around the medical center or talk to him on the phone, I would see & feel his smile. Dr Cowan was a kind & caring & he will be dearly missed. My prayers are with you during this difficult time.

  4. My-Diem Tong says:

For 6 years Charles’s office was next door to mine. He was a dear friend. His love of life was evident in the sound of his boyish laughter. I will miss him so.
