Obituary

Charles Francis Kenney, 91, a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home with family members in San Clemente on September 21, 2009. His life was filled with accomplishments, beginning in 1939 with his football career with USF, the US Navy, and San Francisco 49ers 1947. After football, Charles continued his career with the Navy, serving as Captain in the US Naval Reserves for over thirty years. In this capacity he was the Commanding Officer of the Los Alamitos Naval Air Reserve Base in the early 1970’s. Charles was also tremendously successful with his career in education, beginning as a teacher, principal, and ultimately as Superintendent of schools. Dr. Kenney was the Superintendent of Schools of Santa Ana Unified School District, Capistrano Unified School District, and the Mount Eden School District. He was also Superintendent of the Antilles School District, a part of the Department of Defense Education Activity, located in Puerto Rico. While Dr. Kenney devoted his life to serving students and providing leadership to aspiring administrators, he also spent his life being a wonderful father and grandfather to his nine loving children, eighteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In addition to his children, he leaves behind his brother, Joe Banovich, and many nieces and nephews. As a result of his strong work ethic, integrity, and wisdom, Charles Kenney is a hero and role model for his loved ones, and all are immensely grateful for his guidance and love.

  1. TO my friends Bill and Pete, and all of your brothers and sisters, you have my deepest sympathy. May your father rest with Christ. AA

  2. Dad, you touch a lot of lives. You were a great man to many. We’ll miss you often. I imagine you’ll continue on just the same where ever you are and peace will follow. Love, Colleen

  3. To all of Chuck Kenney’s family: I have always loved hearing your Dad’s life stories. I will miss him at family gatherings and will miss hearing him tell the stories once more. May he rest in peace.

  4. Bill and Family,

I am certainly saddened for you as you mourn the passing of a very great Dad.

I never had the pleasure of meeting your father, but can plainly see how his loving guidance shaped Bill to be the man he is today.

I doubt many, if any of us will accomplish the extraordinary and remarkable accomplishments of your father. While I grieve for you, I also will give the Lord thanks for allowing each of you to grow in the love and nurturing of such a talented man. Your father’s life was truly the epitome of a life well lived. I know the Lord has welcomed him home. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers as you lay your precious father/grandfather to rest.

    Blessings,
    Gene and Lori Graham

When I think of my uncle I remember all the wonderful summers of my youth, when we were all together. Wonderful times with great and loving people. I’m very thankful for the times we had. The Kenney Family is part of me and who I am. I mourn the loss of my uncle but also celebrate his life and the joy it brought me.
