Obituary

The abrupt passing of Carolyn Hood on Dec. 29, 2018 after a recent diagnosis of cancer has left her family and friends with a profound, stunned sadness.  Carol died peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Stamford, CT on June 15, 1934 to William and Mildred (Roland) Dougherty, Carol was known for her genteel and classy manner, her great compassion for others and for her bridge playing acumen.  Carol grew up in Erie, PA and attended Lake Erie College. While in college she met the love of her life – Arthur Hood through his fraternity – Phi Gamma Delta. Carol and Art were soon married and enjoyed a long, loving marriage.  They had just celebrated 64 years of marriage two days before she passed.

With Art’s career in the US Air Force, Carol and Art travelled across the country and made close friends everywhere they lived.  Carol loved volunteering with the Orange County Philharmonic Society and the arts throughout her life.  She began a long career in Real Estate while residing in Redlands, CA and earned her Broker’s license while living in Huntington Beach. She continued to sell homes when they moved to San Clemente, CA and retired shortly before moving to San Juan Capistrano.  A long-time Bridge enthusiast, Carol devoted much of her time later in life pursuing Life Master status.   Carol’s life was guided by her strong Catholic faith and she was a Eucharistic Minister and Bereavement Minister at St. Edward The Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point.  Carol lived life to the fullest and was sincerely loved by her many friends, spanning back to the college days as well as her wonderful neighbors, bridge mates and family members.

Carol is survived by her two sisters, Nancy (Dougherty) Herzog (Erie, PA), and MaryBeth Dougherty (Laguna Niguel), as well as Husband Art (San Juan Capistrano), son William (San Diego) and two daughters Linda Beyer (Beavercreek, OH) and Suzie Cutter (Rancho Santa Margarita) – in addition to her six grandchildren: Matthew, Nicole, Jordan, Tanner, Austin and Aidan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and reception will be held at 11:00 am on Feb. 9  th  at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Dana Point.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NephCure Kidney Foundation:  https://nephcure.org/donate-2/?caid=70161000000VNVR  in honor of her youngest Grandson, Aidan.
