Carl Urban Nogle
Carl Urban Nogle of Mission Viejo died peacefully April 9, 2005, at age 78, after a battle with congestive heart failure and pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born March 24, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and moved to California with his family in 1936. Carl graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles in 1945, and served his country in WW II in the US Army Signal Corps in Kyoto and Yokohama, Japan.
Carl earned his bachelor’s degree in 1954 at UCLA, and was a controller for 40 years. He was an avid reader and movie aficionado, with a video library of hundreds of titles. Carl was also a pioneer in the era of home computers. A devoted and loving grandfather, his five grandchildren were his pride and joy. ‘Papa’, you will forever be in our hearts.
Survivors include his sons, Gregory and Curtis both of Mission Viejo, their wives and five grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, April 15, 2005 at 1 pm at O?Connor Mortuary in Laguna Hills, followed by interment at El Toro Memorial Park. The family asks that memorial donations be made to Glen Yermo Elementary School’s special education program, 26400 Trabuco, Mission Viejo, CA 92691.

I was very sorry to hear about your dad. I have some fond memories of “family” times together with him and the two of you. The Nogle family has always been a special part of our lives.

Uncle Carl will always be the man with the booming voice, steady gaze, and razor-sharp wit. While growing up he always seemed larger than life, someone whose presence commanded attention and respect – both of which he deserved. When I think of my Uncle Carl I’ll forever have memories of pinochle games, Christmas movies, and political chats. And while I can’t say that he and I saw eye to eye on much politically, he was the first person I can clearly remember to really talk to me about politics adult to adult – I think I was maybe ten at the time – but that didn’t matter. I had to know my mind and defend myself, and the honing of those skills has served me well. Politics is now my life and Uncle Carl was the first person to plant that seed in me. That seed has sprouted and I wish now I could thank him for helping to send me on my way. I think wherever he is he knows how much he has influenced me, even if I never realized it until after he was gone.
I wish I could be there with everyone, family and friends, to share in the memories and celebrate the life of a man we loved, but it was sort of determined that Uncle Carl would view my leaving school to embark on the long and expensive trip home for his memorial as impractical and unnecessary. So I will remember my Uncle from here and send my loving thoughts south to you all. I know nothing I say can ease the pain of loss so I will simply end by saying that Uncle Carl was a good man in every way that counts and he will be missed.

Mr. Nogle was truley a remarkable man. He was like a father and friend to me for over 25 years. I grew up with Greg and Curtis Nogle and they have been life long friends of mine. Carl and I had numerous conversations and I was always interested in his thoughts and stories. He always welcomed me in his home and I will never forget his warm smile and friendly demeanor. I will miss you very Mr. Nogle and my thoughts and prayers are with the Nogle family.
