Condolences to the Peternell’s from Carl’s youngest male cousin, Mark; while we did not spend much time together, the time we did was always of good family gatherings. Will always remember your father and mother, sharing their homes with me and you offering me my first beer in Sioux Falls, SD a few years before I reached my majority, always good times, you will be missed. I just came across this memorial for Carl on the internet. I attended middle school with Carl at Dapplegray and the first year of high school at Rolling Hills. Our relationship centered around sports which were baseball, football, and basketball. I recall one event at Dapplegray that characterized Carl to me. There was a tug of war with a rope. Carl indicated he would be on one side of the rope until they said BEGIN at which time he switched sides. He quietly calculated what he was going to do next. I look forward to seeing him again in eternity.

I was going through some old photos and found Carl’s picture from 1976. I did not know Carl well. I was a 17 year old who by good fortune was able to see a bit of Switzerland with a friend of a friend, who happened to be a professor of musicology at USC. We saw a young man with a backpack hitchhiking. He commented “this guy is from Sweden”, and pulled over to offer a ride. It was Carl, also from CA, who was taking a break from playing pro baseball (Italy, Spain? Can’t remember). We ended up travelling together for about a week, staying with the family I was assigned to (Experiment in International Living), going rock climbing in the Jura, travelling to Luzerne where we both got a miserable GI bug probably from an ice cream vendor. I was struck by what a great guy he was and how easy he was to befriend. I remembered his name to this day. I will try to attach the photo of Carl, me, and Peter Blatter, an experienced Swiss climber who saw to it we didn’t do anything stupid in the Jura. My sincerest condolences to Carl’s family and friends. I’m sorry I didn’t know him better.

Very strange evening. I just finished watching a Dodgers game. I was thinking of past teammates & Carl’s name came to mind. I Googled his name & found this site. The more I read of the remembrances the more it became clear it was indeed a friend from Miraleste High School. He was a Junior & I was freshman. I remember we played Avalon High School on Catalina in basketball. We stayed a couple of days on the island. I played JV that year. Carl was on Varsity. I had 24 points in our game. All I had for underwear was boxers & had to tape them up so they wouldn’t show through the my shorts. Carl came up to our room at hotel and we had some cards. I said I’ll cut you for High card for ten bucks. All the spending money we were given by the high school. He won. I don’t know why but I took off running. Down several flights of stairs out on the street & this went on for several blocks. Carl was supposed to be the fast guy in the school. He never caught me. We stopped. Both of us out of breath & just laughed the two of us out there on the sidewalk. We had so much fun. Playing basketball on 8 foot baskets on at the grade school so we all could dunk. Carl & I were on different teams & he went for a big dunk & me not knowing any better went up & blocked his slam. The look on his face. Total shock. Kids being kids. Life was simple then but yet fulfilling. I’m so sorry to learn of his passing. My heart goes out to his friends & family. I hadn’t thought of Carl in years. I don’t know why he came to mind tonight. I don’t like getting older & I’ve been struggling with more years behind me then ahead of me. After learning of the loss of Carl. I feel fortunate to be still here & active in sports & realize life is shorter for others & it’s a privilege to grow old. Rest easy Carl. My heart hurts but I can still smile thinking of those years as kids void of worries.
