Morgan, though I’ve never met you, Carl spoke so lovingly of you at our yearly Anteater golf reunions in Arizona. I had the honor of coaching Carl at Irvine from 1972 – 75. What a talented athlete on the field, 2 National Championship Rings and a group of teammates that became friends for life. Leaving Irvine in the mid 70’s many of his Irvine teammates went the separate ways to pursue their careers, raise their children and make their contributions to society. Carl was certainly a success in his career choices and his greatest accomplishment his daughter, Morgan. In the early 2000’s Irvines baseball program was resurrected and Carl became a catalyst to bring the old anteaters back and involved. If you were a friend of Carl you were a friend for life. When Mike Gillespie, Carl’s high school baseball coach, was named the coach at Irvine he became even more energized about the program. Since that time Carl and his buddy and teammate, Tad Davis, made a point of contacting and keeping the 70’s Anteater Community together. Carl made my life and I am sure the lives of people he came in contact with more fulfilling. We are going to miss you and we will never forget you. God bless you, Morgan and the Peternell Family.

It’s not fair he is gone. He was expected to be there for our passing, not this way. I am shocked and saddened. I will miss him dearly, my heartfelt condolence to Morgan and Sara. I will choose to celebrate his life, because he lived it, every day, every moment, every pitch, every stroke, and God bless him and hold him in his hands, every party. I am working on the memories of all we did living and will share them later in this tribute, they only bring smiles to my heart and if we don’t chuckle we missed the man. God Speed Old Friend.

One night in 1974, an entire baseball team walked into the Red Lion Pizza Parlor in Waikiki and an especially cute guy named Carl asked me for a “free pizza”. I said sure, and a special friendship began. Carl & Trout came back to Hawaii for Christmas break that year. I was already crammed into an apartment with 3 guys and 2 girlfriends, and I panicked that they wouldn’t all get along. They found my place while I was at work, and within an hour the 5 guys were best buds!! Every time I saw or talked to Carl in all these years, it was as if no time had passed. He always made sure everyone had a great time. I hoped he knew how much he was loved by all of us. It’s all bueno where you are, Carl, not so much for those of us left behind. Love to all, “Honolulu Lulu”

  5. Dear carl,
we are so sorry you are not with us any more. But we feel blessed that we had the opportunity to spend time with you this October, at Gunnars Party.
Its was so nice to see you enjoying good time with our friends and family both from USA and Norway, where parts of your roots are from.
