Calvin Rahmann

Calvin Rahmann, 83, passed away peacefully in Irvine, California on February 5, 2023. He is survived by son Kevin and his wife Teri; daughter Karen Ortega and her husband Daniel Ortega; son Steven and his wife Hilda; grandsons Daniel Adam Ortega and his wife Monica, Taylor Rahmann and his wife Sasha, and Cody Rahmann and his wife Marissa; granddaughters Natalya and Julia Rahmann; great grandson André Ortega; and great granddaughters Bailey, Daisy, and Sophie Rahmann and Mila Ortega. Calvin was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Louise and his grandson Christopher Ortega.

Calvin was born on July 15, 1939 in Northfield, Minnesota. After graduating from Northfield High School in 1957, he served 23 years on active duty in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. His ship board duty assignments include serving on the U.S.S. Essex, U.S.S. San Diego, and the U.S.S. Chicago. While assigned to sea duty he completed six Mediterranean cruises and three Pacific cruises. His shore duty assignments include serving as an instructor at both Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois and at Fleet Work Study Group in San Diego, California, as a recruiting supervisor at the Minneapolis, Minnesota Recruiting Station, and as a boat repair supervisor at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado in California. His career highlights include serving at the Bay of Pigs invasion, serving in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, traversing both the Suez and Panama canals, crossing the equator many times, and circumnavigating the Earth.

After retiring from the Navy, Calvin worked for almost ten years as a supervisor for subcontractors in the Naval ship repair industry in San Diego. Later, he was very active in his retirement communities in both Palm Springs and Irvine. Calvin was a caring and helpful person with an adventurous spirit who lived a rich, meaningful, and impactful life. He loved his wife Louise dearly. He was very involved with his children and grandchildren. Calvin made a difference in the lives of many people and will be dearly missed.

A memorial service for Calvin will be held on Monday, March 6th at 2:30 P.M. at the Miramar National Veterans Cemetery in San Diego followed by a “Celebration of Life” from 3:30 P.M. to 7 P.M. in the Garden Terrace at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar. The “Celebration of Life” will include dinner. All friends and family of Calvin are welcome. Please call, text, or email one of Calvin’s children if you plan on attending.

His family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetes Association at Diabetes.org.

  1. I will always remember Mr. Rahmann with love and respect. He was always so sweet and gracious. I always remember Mr. & Mrs. Rahmann walking their poodles when they lived on Palm Avenue. Every time I would see him, he would be smiling and would greet me with the tightest hug. May God grant you a peaceful rest.
