Bruce
MacVicar
Apr 1, 1942 — Sep 27, 2026
Bruce MacVicar was a devout Catholic, beloved husband, cherished friend, proud veteran and a man whose generosity and kindness touched many lives.
Bruce earned a degree in Sociology from UC Santa Barbara and later served in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. These experiences helped shape a life dedicated to serving others…a commitment that remained with him throughout his life.
That commitment was perhaps most evident in the devotion he showed his beloved wife, Ann. Bruce remained faithfully by her side, caring for her until the end. After her passing, he continued to open his heart and home to others, providing a young adult facing hardship a place to live, followed by two people experiencing homelessness who found a safe and warm home with him for several years. Helping others was not simply something Bruce did; it was how he lived.
At the heart of Bruce’s life was his Catholic faith. He loved Scripture, especially the Gospel of John, and faithfully led a weekly Bible study at the senior living apartments. When he was no longer physically able to attend, he continued leading the study from his bed, with recordings shared with others. His faith was not something he kept to himself. He shared it through his words, his leadership, and most importantly, through the way he lived.
Bruce believed deeply in living out the teachings of Jesus through his actions. At church events, he quietly sponsored a concert event table without putting his own name on it. Instead, he placed a simple sign on the table that read, “Jesus Loves You.” Those three words reflected the message Bruce wanted others to know: that they were loved.
Bruce was also incredibly generous, always willing to help those in need. He gave freely without ever expecting anything in return. His generosity came from a genuine desire to help and a belief that everyone deserved to be treated with care and dignity. In addition, he was very generous with his time. He made daily phone calls with a simple goal: to reach out to others, make sure they were okay, listen to what was happening in their lives and offer encouragement. Bruce saw the good in people and did not judge them. He met people where they were and treated them with dignity and reminded people that they mattered and were not alone.
Bruce also found other simple ways to bring joy to others. He started a Twitter account where he wrote hundreds of dog jokes simply to make people smile. His humor and willingness to bring a little laughter into someone’s day reflected his genuine desire to brighten the lives of those around him.
Bruce’s life was a beautiful reflection of the faith he believed so deeply in and he leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and service in the many lives he touched.
Bruce is survived by his brother, Jim MacVicar, and many dear friends who will miss him deeply. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann; his brother; and his parents, James and Roberta MacVicar.
May the words Bruce shared so often, and the message he lived by, be the lasting reminder of his life:
“Jesus Loves You.”
