Obituary

Bettye (aka Kelley) Lou Sweeten, age 93, died Tuesday, 26 June 2018 at Saddleback Memorial Hospital. She was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Claude Hurst and Ethel (Perry) Waters.  She follows her parents, husband and love of her life Jack Sweeten, sister & brother-in-law, Tharon and Ovando Gasaway, brother Kenneth Waters, beloved granddaughter Courtney Cohen, and adored dog Bungee in death.  She is survived by her daughter, Susan Kelley Cohen and son-in-law, Phillip Cohen, nieces Katherine and Madeline Waters as well as Jack’s daughter Lynda Ivy and granddaughter Dawnel Skinner.

Bettye grew up in rural Oklahoma where she enjoyed riding horses bareback and drinking milk she’d left in icy cold streams.   She moved to Oregon following the death of her adored father.  In California she became a wife and mother.  Her pride and joy was always her loving and deeply caring daughter Sue.  She provided a supportive and nurturing home for Sue, regularly cashing in her Christmas Club monies for college tuition.  Her life became magical upon marrying Jack Sweeten who was taken far too soon.

Bettye was staunchly independent.  She honed her skills and began working at North American Rockwell in Administrative Services where she was regularly promoted and developed lifelong friendships.  As part of her job she obtained a high security clearance and she is taking her secrets with her.

She regularly attended St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church until moving to Orange County.  She demonstrated a green thumb particularly with bromeliads giving her garden a magnificent profusion of color.  A heady game of cribbage, monthly Bunco games, 5K walks and water aerobics provided her grand entertainment.  The traveling bug and a great group of friends led her to Europe, Asia and several cruises.  Special thanks goes to Bettye’s caretakers and Tabatha who not only cared for her meticulously but made her last days especially fun filled and enjoyable.

A viewing is scheduled for Thursday, 5 July 2018 between 7 and 9 pm at O’Connor Mortuary, 25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills, California 92653.
