Obituary

Beryl passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2015. Born Beryl Kathryn Sprague on September 14, 1925 in Johnsonburg, PA, she was the sixth of eight children. Her first job was as a soda jerk at the drugstore in town. At 18 she moved to Washington, DC, where she worked until she married Nelson Phelps and raised their 3 children in Silver Spring, MD. Years later she returned to work until she retired as an analyst in 1987 to travel, play bridge, and volunteer.

In 2005, after much cajoling, she moved to Pittsburg, CA, to live with son Donald. When he died unexpectedly in 2007, she moved to Laguna Woods, CA, to be closer to daughter Diane, where she was visited often by daughter Carol from her home in Reunion Island, France

She will be missed by those who survive her: sisters Margaret Swanson and Dorothy Barwin of Johnsonburg; brother-in-law Gordon Wriggle; daughters Carol Vignal (Reunion Island, France) and Diane Phelps (Joan Brown, Laguna Woods); grandchildren Lucas, Lena, Eric (Shy), and Russ (Mark); great granddaughter Sylvie, and many nieces and nephews as well as other family friends who considered her their Aunt Beryl. She is reunited in heaven with husband Nelson, son Donald, sons-in-law Serge Vignal and Jose Reyes, and siblings Ernie Zierden, Genevieve (Robert) Ashby, Marion (Andrew) Patrick, Matilda Wriggle, and Merle Eddie (Rose) Sprague as well as brothers-in-law Bill Swanson and Regis Barwin.

She will be interred near Donald and Jose at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Orange, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Organ Project at Laguna Country Methodist Church, 24442 Moulton Pkwy, Laguna Woods, CA 92637.

  1. I remember Beryl as my Girl Scout troop leader when I was young. She was a sweet lady to us!

I am trying to locate her daughter, Carol Phelps Vignal, who was a classmate of mine in the Springbrook High School, Class of 1969. We are planning our 50th reunion and do not have her contact information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and God bless…
