Obituary

Barbara Jean Schone, age 66, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on April 06, 2007 Good Friday at her home in Mission Viejo, California after a courageous three year battle with ovarian cancer. She was a twenty-five year survivor of breast cancer.

Barbara was born on October 13, 1940 in Kansas City, Kansas, one of four children to parents John and Anna Fabac. She attended Wyandotte High School and Kansas City, Kansas Junior College. She married her ‘high school sweetheart,’ Don Schone, on May 27, 1961 and together they moved to Downey, California. Barbara was part of Downey North American Aviation during the first moon landing. In 1970 they moved to the planned community of Mission Viejo, California with their two sons, Scott and Steve. She worked for Mission Viejo Company MVC, Public Relations-Community Development, from 1971 until her retirement in 1997.

Barbara devoted much of her retired life to volunteer work and historical MVC alumni projects within the community. On February 5, 2007, she was honored with the televised ‘Community of Character Award’ by the Mission Viejo City Council. Her close family and many MVC friends attended.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Don; sons, Scott wife Kathleen and Steve; grandchildren Andrew and Annaka; brothers, Bill and John Fabac of Kansas City, Kansas; sister, JoAnn Fabac DaSilva of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law Alice Schone Adams of Athol, ID; brother-in-law, Hugh Schone of Garden Grove, California and a nephew and four nieces in California, Kansas and Idaho.

Funeral Mass and services will be held Friday, April 13, 2007 at 10:30am at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Mission Viejo, followed by a luncheon reception to celebrate Barbara’s life at the Mission Viejo Country Club and then burial ceremony at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Lake Forest, California.

Barbara Fabac Schone’s special qualities of kindness, consideration and devotion to family and friends will be dearly missed. She will be forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

  1. We were not directly related even though we grew up in the same city, but I always held her in admiration.

    Mom,
I’ll always remember how gracefully you spent your final days. What an inspiration to others. The kids still talk about you all the time. I’m sorry it took so long to write this, I get so sad trying. I miss you so much. Thank you for loving us and making a great home for us. No mother ever loved their children more. I can’t wait to see you again.

Thank you everyone who signed the guestbook. So many! It reminds of what a special person my mother really was.

    Don,
I read your anniversary letter to Barb. It was beautiful, and I thought how beautiful your love for each other was and how yours is still so much alive. All very inspiring! Thanks,

    Barbara Jean My Beauty Queen:

On this one year anniversary apart, where do I start after more than 50 years together? I remember the first time I saw you during the summer of 1957. You were wearing a blue jersey and white short-shorts and playing miniature golf. Your long hair was swishing in the breeze”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?I was simply mesmerized. I was driving my Cushman Eagle motor-scooter with bud Tom Tillery, captain of the WY swim team and two years my senior. As you know, four years later, Tom was best man at our wedding on May 27, 1961.

I asked Tom, “Who is that angel?” He replied, “That’s Barbara Fabac.” As I gazed at you, I whispered…”Someday I will marry you.” “She is way out of your league,” Tom rightfully said. He was correct. You were always the classiest girl then and later became a classy lady.

His challenge kept me going. A few months later, you were Wyandotte High Senior Cheerleader and Editor of the school newspaper byline: “Fabac Facts” and noticed that this, then skinny swimmer, was making news. You were in a mixed class with two of my friends…Quarterback Jim Gill and “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”rough-neck”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Â Bob Chumley. They fortunately convinced you I was a senior, although I was only a lowly junior. We doubled dated in my new-used tan 54 Ford with Bob & his date and went to see the premier of Sayonara in KCMO in Nov 1957…I was hooked.

Yes, Barb you were truly beautiful, but your sweetness and inner beauty was what I truly and lastingly fell in love with. You were a Strawberry Hill girl and loved family traditions and your many friends. After we married, the opportunities of California became our destiny….but you always wanted to “move back home” 40 of the 46 years away from Bulldogs/Jayhawks/Strawberry Hill country.

There are so many great stories about our Sons Scott and Steve, Grandkids Andrew and Annaka and your Sister JoAnn and all of our many loved ones and friends…I know you would want me to talk about them, rather than you. Sorry “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”Googey,”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Â today is all about you”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?my sweetheart forever more.

Five past swim team members WY”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã¢”žÂ¢58 – Mike Calwell, WY”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã¢”žÂ¢59; Terry Lanaman, Louie Shelleda, “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”Woody”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Â Taylor & K-State”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã¢”žÂ¢60 Mike Pritchard came and stayed with me the week after your passing. Their visit really helped.

I followed your “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”firm”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Â suggestion, of more than a year ago, and made the following trips before the end 2007:

1 First, Brother Hugh and I flew in July 07 to visit my Sister Alice & husband Larry and their clan and animals, with Butch Higgs and wife in the Coeur d”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã¢”žÂ¢Alene Idaho area. I also made a lone trip to Las Vegas to visit your Sister JoAnn & Richard in May 2007

2 Next, in Oct 07 I flew to KCK to visit your KC family your Auntie Emily has since passed away”°Ã¢”šÂ¬’she was as sweet as you and I gave all of them gifts from your massive collection. I met with our WY Classmates at the 50″°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã¢”žÂ¢s Annual Wyandotte County Lake Picnic. There was also a WY Swimmers Luncheon that Mike Calwell in our wedding organized for swimmers from years 1956 through 1960 held in Overland Park, KS. Your youngest brother John J. Fabac passed away in Jan 2008.

3 Finally, I went to Melbourne Australia in Dec 07 to visit Buzz Fischer in our wedding, wife Diane and their son Daniel”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?I really missed you more than ever then”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?you would have loved it.

The Bunco Babes are taking care of me, as are our sons, family & friends.

We forgot to take photos of your “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”Celebration-of-Life”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Â Memorial at the Mission Viejo Country Club over 130 attended. We had your camera but were just too numb to remember to use it. We did have a slideshow of your life as a child through early 2007 and a video of your wonderful speech to the MV City Council, accepting your “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”Community of Character Award” in Feb 2007.

Finally, today April 6, 2008 Good Friday last year all of your CA family put flowers and cards on your tasteful headstone. I will be there next Sunday, 4/13/08 at 2 pm, the day and time of your heart breaking interment nearly one year ago.

I am updating your websites honey.
    Love you forever mor
