Obituary
In Loving Memory of
Barbara Mary Smith
July 15, 1930 ~ October 24, 2019
Barbara was born in Iowa City, Iowa. She married Joel Smith in 1963.
She was a long-time resident in San Juan Capistrano. She and Joel were original owners in the San Juan Hills East Block 4 community. She served in the real estate escrow business for 30 years. She was on the homeowners’ board of directors for many years lending her real estate and property-management knowledge to help monitor community affairs.
She was a regular at homeowners’ association events, keeping track of the party finances. She
and her husband were world travelers enjoying both land adventures and ocean cruises.
She was a true animal lover and a strong advocate for animal care and rights. She was a regular volunteer at the San Juan Capistrano senior center. She also contributed to many charities supporting and preserving state and national parks.
Barbara would be pleased to know that her neighbors and others are making efforts to find a good local home for her beloved cat, Toby, who was so fortunate to be rescued by her in 2013.
Barbara asked that her ashes be scattered at sea along with those of Joel.
She will be missed with great affection by her neighbors and friends in the San Juan Capistrano community and beyond.

One of my dad’s favorite first cousins. You’ll be missed but are once again with Joel, your parents and the Iowa City gang. Always remember your style and grace. Love, Julie
