Obituary

Long time Shippensburg resident and Shippensburg University faculty member Barbara Crist passed away on December 18, 2007 in Irvine, California, after a brief illness.

Barbara was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1919 and grew up in Los Angeles. She graduated from University of California Berkeley and became one of the first WAVE officers in the United States Navy during World War II. She and her late husband Tom met at the Naval Air Station in Seattle, and they were married in 1943. Following the War, Barbara and Tom lived in Cape May, New Jersey, and Shippensburg.

After raising her three children, Barbara joined the faculty at Penn Hall in Chambersburg, and earned her masters and doctorate degrees at The University of Maryland. She joined Tom on the faculty of Shippensburg University and taught learning skills to disadvantaged students. After retirement, Barbara and Tom moved back to Southern California.

Barbara is survived by her three children: daughter Deborah Crist Wilker and sons Malcolm Crist and Andy Crist, all of whom live in Southern California, and a granddaughter, Annie Wilker.

  1. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Barbara.

  2. I was sorry to hear that Mrs. Crist died. My mother just had a real nice visit with her a few months ago in Shippensburg. She was always very kind to myself and my brother. She “hired” me to babysit Andy which meant that I got to drink sodas and eat pretzels and watch TV at the Crist’s house with Andy and get paid for it!
Anyway, she was a great neighbor and a friend to my family for many years.
I hope Andy, Malcolm, and Deb are in good health. I live in the Leola, PA area, near Lancaster. After many years of working for Graco Children’s Products I now work on my own doing design work. Please call if you are ever in the area. 717 656 3775.

  3. Dear Malcolm, Debbie and Andy,
Just a short note to tell you how shocked and saddened we were to hear of your mother’s sudden death.

I know MaryLou was also devastated
to read it in the paper before she called me.

Your mother was a dear friend of ours for many, many years and we looked forward to our visits when she came back and stayed with Mary Lou. Mary Lou went to great lengths to arrange for a group of us to go out and eat together or get together while she was here and before your dad’s death the same. The last time your mother was here she told me Andy, that you arranged for drivers for her to make the trip possible from the airport.
I spent an afternoon visiting with her while Mary Lou went for her kidney dialysis. We had a delightful time. Several years ago Fred and I invited many of your former neighbors and your parents friends to our house to share in their visit back here. We always looked forward to seeing them.

We just wanted you to know we loved your mother and were deeply saddened to hear of her death. We send you all our love and sympathy.
And to Annie, who I have not seen, but of whom your mother was very proud.
With sincere thoughts to all of you,
    Fred and Rose Dillner

  4. Joan Squires says:

    Dear Deborah, Malcolm and Andy,

I was so saddened to learn of your mother’s death in December. We lost our mother Millie Squires last May, and your mother wrote beautiful condolence notes to both my brother and me. I had responded to your mother about how much it meant to us. She was always so kind, and I still remember how she assisted me with an essay that enabled me to enter a year-long fellowship program.

She was a dear friend of my mother’s, and I know that Mom treasured her friendship. My husband Tom and I send you our condolences.

    With Sympathy,
    Joan Squires
