  1. Jacques was a caring and wonderful man. He loved his family and enjoyed his vacations with them so much. He always has pictures of his trips with them and could talk for hours about the trip. he was a great man to report to and work with. He will be missed very much.

  2. Mario says:

The Truong Family moved to Canada at about the same time as the Estable Family, In 1966/67, if I am not mistaken. My parents and Bao’s father worked at Laval University as professors. We lived in the same neighbourhood of Neree Tremblay in Ste-Foy, a ten minute walk away and a few minutes bike ride away. Equi-distant from the baseball field, park and tennis courts. We went to the same High School, Katimavik.

Bao was a year older than my brother Juan and 2 years older than me. We played, soccer, basketball (with “Hubie” as coach), baseball and tennis, many, many times over many many years. I would call his number weekly, if not daily after school, to go play tennis or throw the baseball or shoot some baskets. If he could not come play, one of his two younger brothers would take his place. I still remember the telephone number.

Bao was always kind but competitive in sports. He had a wicked serve in Tennis. He was the hardest working player on the court, diamond or field.

Never was there a quarrel with Bao, He had only friends. People who looked up to him, including me and my brother Juan.

As we progressed through life, he went to McGill and me and Juan went to UofOttawa, so we started to lose touch. In the 90’s, 92 I think, I visited him in California. His hair had gone white, and I attributed this to the tragedy of the loss of one of his younger brothers (if I remember correctly, his name was “Quonny”). I can’t even imagine how much pain and sorrow this must have caused him. Still, other than the white hair, Bao was the same when I visited him. A pleasure to hang out with. Always encouraging and positive.

Over the years I called him only a handful of times and I regret there were not more calls. Since I am not very active on Facebook, I learned only recently of his health condition and that a similar health condition claimed the life of his dear sister Lan. I was grief stricken when I learned this.

My last call to Bao was about a month ago. We laughed about Hubie and wind sprints and playing tennis and that I still remembered his childhood phone number. He did not express feeling sorry for his circumstances. He was bravely fighting and we talked about getting a pingpong table so he could “whip me at tennis” one more time…

If Bao had not existed, we would have had to invent him. He was essential and unique and as noble a person as I have ever met. A champion in the face of adversity. A beacon for the best of what it means to be “human”.

My sincere condolences to his family and many, many friends.

    Mario Estable

  4. My condolences, as Jacques was a very special person. He had a great sense of humor and an uncanny ability to know when you needed to hear from him. Jacque had an impact on me that will never be forgotten.
