Obituary

Art Jenkins passed away unexpectedly at the age of 70 on March 5 at his home in Laguna Beach, California. He was a loving father and a loyal friend, teacher, mentor, and coach. A self-made man committed to strong Christian values, Art was loved and respected by many. He is now at home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his loved ones who went home before him.

Art was born on November 21, 1941, in Alhambra, California, to parents James and Isabelle Jenkins. After graduating from Monrovia-Duarte High School and Azusa Pacific College, Art received a master’s degree from Los Angeles State University. A consummate athlete who was passionate about tennis, beach volleyball and basketball. Art was a teacher and a coach at Dana Hills and Aliso Niguel High Schools. He coached for many community programs, as well. Throughout his life, he gave time and energy freely to students and athletes. His teams won numerous championships in both tennis and basketball.

Art is survived by his only child, Kymberly Jenkins, and his beloved grandson, Dylan and his brother William & Annie Jenkins.

A celebration of Art’s life will take place on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. at the Little Church by the Sea, 468 Legion Street in Laguna Beach.

  1. Kym, I will be praying for you and Dylan daily. Your Dad had such an impact on my life as an early adult. His wisdom, insights, and sense of humor are things that I strive to emulate in my life today. I have coached many different sports teams since then, and I always try to think “What would Art do in this situation”.

He was such an inspiration and mentor to countless coaches and teachers throughout Southern California.

    He will be missed.

May God completely bless you and Dylan,

    John Anderson and Family

Mr. Jenkins was a vital teacher and tennis coach for me during my time at Dana Hills HS.
His psychology class was one of the most memorable and provocative classes that I took, one that has proven has a lasting positive impact in my life. He led by example with a generous heart.

Art was consistently positive, helpful, and genuinely kind to all of us youths at DHHS, whether in his classes or on the courts, and I will hold him in my heart as a very special soul. Peace to his family and much gratitude and love….

  4. I have been trying to type something in this box that would justify the amount of love that I have for Mr.Jenkins and I keep coming up short with the right words to say. I am just gonna speak from the heart.
I had just moved to the u.s from Iran as a soph in highschool. I did not know any one in the school and felt isolated and lost. I was fortunate enough to be placed into Mr.Jenkins psychology class and that is where I had the privilege to get to know him.
He also coached my basketball team and I was able to learn as much as I could from Mr Jenkins not just about the game but life in general. He is one of my role models in life and even writing this is a bitter sweet for me because even though he is gone, the impact he has had on my life continues to live.

The last time I saw Mr. Jenkins was at a gas station in Laguna Niguel. I had been struggling with addiction for a few years at that time. He asked me how I have been and I didnt have it in me to tell him that I was dying inside, because I cared so much for him that I did not want to let him down. I was ashamed to tell the truth. I remember leaving that gas station with tears in my eyes because deep down I knew he would have done anything he could to help me that day.

Well today I can proudly say that those days are long gone.

I am 5 years and 4 months clean and sober.
I received a Masters degree in clinical psychology
I teach psychology classes and i absolutely love it
and on top of all that I have been coaching high school basketball for the past 5 seasons.

    Hmmmmmm…..

Now this COULD be a coincidence, BUT I have a feeling that the path I chose in life is a direct result of the impact Mr.Jenkins had on my life.

I know your proud of the man I have become. I want you to know that you played a major role in my life and for that I am forever grateful

    Love

  5. Art used to make me the most wonderful waffles topped with cherries and whipped cream in addition to the orange juice and coffee. We were comfortable conversing or merely sitting on the sofa watching sports or reading and on occasion walked around his neighborhood. I hadn’t seen him for two years and sadly missed the opportunity to enjoy his company those final years.
