Arlis J. Simmons, 97, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, after a brief illness. A naval aviator, leader, and mentor, he completed what his family lovingly calls his "Final Flight Home." The last of thirteen Simmons siblings, his passing marks the close of a remarkable generation.
Born December 9, 1928, in Hazelhurst, Georgia, Arlis lived a life defined by service, determination, and purpose. Leaving home at aged 14, he completed High School on his own after moving to Los Angeles, CA. While living in Los Angeles, he was encouraged to try for the Naval Academy which he did and was accepted. He served in the Navy for 23 years, retiring with the rank of Commander. As a Navy pilot and officer, he was known for steadiness, discipline, and leadership.
Following his naval career, Arlis began a second career as a Real Estate Broker, first with Shannon & Luchs and then with Weichert Realtors in McLean, Virginia, culminating in a 30-year career. He was widely respected throughout the real estate community and especially cherished by the agents and staff he led. Known for his integrity, steady leadership, and personal investment in others, he took great pride in mentoring those around him. His impact reached far beyond business success; he shaped careers, built confidence, and fostered lasting professional and personal relationships.
Later settling in San Diego, California, he remained active and engaged, with a longstanding interest in health and wellness and a commitment to lifelong learning. Friends and family remember him as an encourager and mentor who sought to make a positive difference in every life he touched.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, and his son, Lowell. He is survived by his daughter, Blake, and his sons, Robin and Cory, his daughter-in-law, Carrie, along with extended family and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on March 14 th , 2026, at 10:00 am at Riverside Cemetery, 1301 Riverside Drive, Macon, Georgia 31202. Lunch gathering to follow.
His legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to others will be remembered by all who knew him.
