Obituary

Alfonso Joaquin Casas was born April 6, 1929 in San Francisco, California. After graduating from City College of San Francisco in 1950, Al enlisted in the Air Force as an airman. During the Korean War he trained to become a pilot and officer. Later in his career he was stationed in the Philippines, and traveled throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia as part of the Office of the Inspector General.
After twenty years of service, Al returned to California to join Sandra Steere, whom he would marry later the same year. He graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1973 and began teaching in the Garden Grove Unified School District. He was a confident teacher that took pride in demanding the best from his students, but could always and easily make his class laugh. He mentored and encouraged the students in his Spanish classes at Santiago High School and Bolsa Grande High School for 25 years. Many of his students remembered him fondly years after they graduated: ?What I remember most is your kindness and warmth. I could always count on your eating in your classroom. You always welcomed students to join you. You ALWAYS had students in there and half of them didn?t take Spanish!?
After Al retired, he and Sandra began traveling again, visiting many of the places he had toured during his Air Force years. When they weren?t traveling, he fastidiously tended to his garden and planned his next trip.
On September 27th, Al Casas died of complications following a hemorrhagic stroke. He is survived by his loving family: wife of 34 years Sandra Casas, sons Paul Casas and Brookes King-Casas, daughters Cathy Miller and Linda Hicks, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2004, 10:00 am at O?Connor Laguna Hills
Mortuary, 25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills, California.
