Obituary

Alexander Hastings Neville, 14 years old, died on 23 June 2020 due to an overdose of fentanyl” a drug he mistook for something else. He self-medicated due, in some part, to the fact that he did not realize how much he was loved by everyone who came into contact with him.

Big ideas became Alex’s hallmark early. Whether becoming Tony Stark when he was 1.5 years old or considering a career as the director of the Smithsonian, he often thought to the future. His ambitions followed his interests in history and a tendency to learn everything about subjects he cared about. He sought to share his interests with his family and friends, even hosting one of his birthday parties with his friends at a Civil War reenactment.

Alex was always introspective about his place in the world. He was very caring and sensitive. Alex felt deeply and empathized with others. Because of this, he courageously fought his impulsiveness and would make heart-felt amends if he hurt others.

Alexander competed with himself to be successful with everything he did. He pushed himself to be a better skateboarder, a better gamer, a better Boy Scout, a better fencer, a better student, a better friend, and a better person. He persevered and generally met success.

Later in life, Alex began to hurt inside and he got tired of trying so hard. He kept skating, but he also started to learn how to numb himself with marijuana. Even then, Alexander employed his intelligence and curiosity to learn the pharmacology and horticulture of hemp. He then began to explore more effective ways to numb his growing negative feelings. This led him to OxyContin in his last 9 days. It turned out that he was being sold fentanyl, a cheaper and more deadly alternative that killed him quickly one night.

Alexander will be missed and never forgotten by his sister Eden, grandmother Sarrie “Graham Cracker,” mother Amy, father Aaron, aunt Jill, aunt “Darth” Bethany, grandfather Rick “Grampie”, Nana Karen, uncle Lance, aunt Melissa, and best buddy Casanova. Alex wished to spend more time with but also leaves behind many other family members and friends who loved him dearly.

The Alexander Neville Foundation for Opiate Education and Assistance has been established for the purpose of building a resource and providing assistance to other adolescents facing similar challenges in life. Please consider donating. Visit GoFundMe.

Alex was a great friend we would always skate and go to the mall to watch movies. Alex was a really good skateboarder because if you told him he can’t or won’t Ollie a huge gap he would do it right in front of you and prove you wrong. Alex was also very selfless and often offered to do good things. RIP Alex he will be missed

    Amy and Aaron,

I just found out. I am crushed. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you both. Alex – what a sweet boy, a wonderful Boy Scout. Always a pleasure to have on our Campouts. I will absolutely support the foundation in his memory.

Rest in peace Alex Neville and Jack Prince. I came to this page because there was a drug presentation at dana hills today and it focused on fentanyl and only fentanyl… it reminded me of both of my classmates’ deaths… I’m going to light a candle right now in my room in memory of these two innocent children who are not with us anymore…

    1. Saw the article on CNN. As a retired teacher, this is a tsunami coming. The one bright, shining, wonderful thing about this is he TALKED to his parents. He knew you were his best hope. I counseled kids in trouble — talk to your parents, or Nana. Most never do. Your son loved you. He died KNOWING he was loved. That is a blessing. Peace ✌ ☮ to you and your family.
