Topic: Unspeakable Sorrow: Helping Grieving People with Disenfranchised Losses ||

It is sometimes very difficult to publicly share one’s sorrow—because the nature of the loss, the cause of death, or the relationship itself is not recognized or “sanctioned” by the social group. In this workshop, we’ll develop tools and intervention strategies for providing counsel and care to people when their grief is “disenfranchised” by friends, other family members, or the community as a whole. We pay special attention to grief with developmentally disabled adults, the death of companion animals, grief in socially-unrecognized relationships, deaths of close friends, and “impossible-to-fathom” deaths like murder-suicide.
