Social Support in Loss: The Vital Role of Nurses

Nurses and other health professionals play a vital role in assessing and addressing failures in the social support system of patients facing loss. Losses like a loved one’s death require significant social support but so do losses like mobility, sensory deficits (hearing and sight), and independence (living alone, driving, etc.) Though “counseling” has traditionally been thought of as the purview of social work and spiritual care, more often than ever nurses are on the front lines of supporting patients as they adjust to these losses.

Objectives. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…

  • Describe the dimensions of positive social support and the contours of disenfranchised losses
  • Apply techniques to help patients and families develop and access positive social support systems
