Beyond the Five Stages: Nursing and Bereavement

Nursing professionals regularly care for individuals facing loss especially when the care setting is the congregation. Most nurses were exposed in their training to linear models of the grief process such as Kubler-Ross’ five stages. However, bereavement professionals have long known that these stage-based models fall far short of effectively describing the lived experience of bereaved individuals, and as a result, care based on the assumptions implicit in such models are often ineffective in providing adequate care. In this workshop, nurses will learn how to utilize contemporary models such as Hoy’s “Compass Model” that are developed out of clinical settings with bereaved individuals.
Objectives. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…
- Describe the pitfalls of viewing grief as a linear, stepwise process with “recovery” as the goal
- Utilize practical strategies for care based on proven contemporary models of the grief process
