Facing an Adult Sibling’s Death: Professional and Personal Considerations

When Don Hoy was dying in September 2021 at the age of 63, Bill “donned the hats” of both bereaved family member and bereavement clinician. Over the next ten days he shepherded his family through the end-of-life decision-making process in the Critical Care Unit, helped navigate the funeral process in a south Louisiana community ravaged by two hurricanes, and leaned on his colleagues in bereavement around the world for his own support. In this fast-paced workshop, he shares the very personal story of that journey and how the clinical research about adult sibling bereavement provides direction for caregiving professionals and volunteers who seek to provide care for people facing this unique kind of loss.
Objectives. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…
- Describe how the bereavement process is uniquely challenged by the death of an adult sibling
- Apply principles for self-care when providing crisis support to one’s own family
- Utilize counseling strategies for supporting individuals who are grappling with the death of an adult sibling
